Just note:
Placement of radar detectors is important. Installed too low on the windshield might result in either low, delayed detection or no detection at all.
Issues like wipers, weather (rain) and tint can also interfere with signal detection.
Best location is as high on the windshield as possible. without blocking the view to the indicator lights (by the rear view mirror).
For my valentine1, my placement is just under the rear view mirror, as seen from my line of sight.

October 4th, 2010 03:49 PM #574If they are using the UK-style average speed cameras, there will be no actual radar and those detectors will be completely useless.

I have thought of that too.
But the local authorities still use plain speed radar gun/cameras to catch speeders.
UK-style speed cameras tend to be big installations and quite expensive too (if compared to radar gun/cameras). Not something you would like to leave in the middle of nowhere for a long time.
Advantage for the NLEX people using vehicle mounted speed radar is they can reposition anytime quickly. So the simple threat of getting caught for speeding is enough to keep most people from going beyond 100kph for the entire length of the NLEX.
The plain fact that I have driven Manila-Subic in one hour a few times without getting caught means NLEX is NOT using average speed cameras. Normal speeds would take at least two hours to drive between Manila and Subic.
Unless there is a sudden major increase in radar-detector-users on the NLEX/SCTEX, I doubt if NLEX authorities would go for UK-style speed cams.Last edited by ghosthunter; October 4th, 2010 at 04:00 PM.

Sir gh, I hope that "funrun" of yours will push through hehe. Para updated lahat sa speed detectors.
Lol, para namang lahat tayo gusto bumirit nito hehe.
BTW I used to do 130kph sa NLEX southbound coming from Valenzuela Exit lang hanggang Balintawak, ang luwang eh (530am). Pero di rin ako nagtagal, mahirap nang mahuli.

Posting the locations of speed-radar locations on the NLEX will not be helpful since they are vehicle mounted or handheld units. They can just change locations during the course of a day.
Just be on the look out for those white unmarked AUV/VAN parked on the side of the road or on top of bridge crossings. Once you see them from a distance, you still have time to slow down quickly to legal speeds.
I used that tactic effectively before I bought my radar detector.

Or even slow down before every bridge, hilltop and curve. Half the fun of driving fast is the acceleration. Top speed is nearly immaterial. (seriously... 100 km/h in a Miata or an old 90's compact car is actually more energizing than 200 km/h in a Camry... snore...)
Aside from the expense, speed camera readings can definitely be argued in court (if you have the time and gumption). They could do an average speed estimation using the cameras they have now, but unless they can guarantee that the camera's clocks are synchronized and can provide direct continuous feed data from the cameras proving it, it's hard to make a case.
Even the most expensive systems in the US are very prone to errors. Which has led many states and districts to junk the program, because the cost of administration, maintenance and wrongful ticketing was higher than the revenue generated by speed cameras.

And notice that the photo was taken from the side of the road, hence my warning on unmarked white AUV/VANs parked on the side of the road especially if there is no one walking or sitting around the vehicle.
You can spot them on the straight stretches easily enough where they prefer to "prey" on speeders.
