I agree, maraming detergent kasi nga high sulfur ang diesel dito sa atin. That's why recommeded na oil is only API CF or CF-4 for toyota innova d4d diesel. Owners manual suggest an API CF or CF-4 for diesel Innovas here in the Philippines. Dirty Diesel causes the Suction Control Valve or SCV D4D dreaded problem. Toyota rectified the problem by improving and making the SCV bigger and longer and wont clog yong SCV. Mura lang naman paayos nito, less than P10,000 yata. Kaya nga lang you will never know when your engine will stall. Kaya just take your chancesna lang. As per Owners manual, Innova diesel oil recommended oil dito sa atin is API CF-4, CF, CD, CE and not those high API ratings for diesels API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS/CI-4/CH-4/CG-4/ SM/SL/SJ ACEA E7.
Not all diesel oil are recommeded for Gasoline engine and not all Gasoline oil are rated for Diesel engine. Meron mga Gasoline oil na SL, SM rated and also CF rated. So pwede sa Gasoline and Diesel.
Recommneded oil for Innova from Owners manual.
Gasoline engine: API SL, SM grade 5w-30 or 10w-30, 15w-40, 20w-50
Diesel engine: G-DLD-1, API CF-4, CF, CD, CE
Example of an Oil that is recommended for both diesel and gas engine
Mobil1 has SM/SL rating for gas, CF rating for diesel
From Mobil1 website
Mobil 1 10W-30 meets or exceeds the requirements of:
ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5
API SN, SM, SL, SJ
ILSAC GF-5
Mobil 1 10W-30 is of the following quality level:
General Motors GM-4718M
General Motors 6094M
API CF
Check your owners manual for recommended oil viscosity and rating!!!!

A very informative post, vic2rem. Thank you.
I never owned a diesel vehicle but even local sub compact cars are starting to appear with diesel variants.
I am open to having one with common-rail injection system but is afraid of the black smoke ,noise and maintenance cost.
I too have witnessed new Fortuners and Innova D4D with 2012-2014 LTO stickers already belching black smoke when accelerating.
Regarding maintenance, what's the difference in maintenance procedures and cost of a Gas and Diesel engines?
The little knowledge I have is there are no sparkplugs for diesel engines and after some thousands of Km you need to have it overhauled.
How mabebenta ang 2012 acquired Innova D4D E stock mags & tires with 3,000 kms. odo.?
naging oil discussion na ah! I was surprised that you mentioned higher API rating like CH-4 & CI-4 is not recommended for Innova Diesel. I know that only API CJ-4 which is especially formulated for Euro 4 compliant fuel is not recommended. Anyway, just wanted to clarify lang regarding this matter. I think oil gurus could shed light on this. Thanks.
ok ba 16 or 17"s na rims sa Innova without sacrificing too much ride quality? what tires kakasya?
yung sa shift lever naman di talaga visible ang vibration nito unless you will hold and change gear/push it to the sides while in neutral.
Oo nga baka nagkalituhan na. Ako kasi yong nagtanong.
Ang tanong ko eh yong kalog sa...
kambyo a.k.a shifter a.k.a. joystick a.k.a transmission lever
Parang jeepney.
Anyway, mile2 gave a very good explanation.
vibrating lever. Yes.
Shaky lever. No.
As per Owners manual, Innova recommended Diesel oil CF-4, CF, CD and CE. You're right about the CH-4 and CI-4. Both CH-4 and CI-5 exceeds the performance of API CD or CE. CJ-4 is not recommended because of our high 500ppm sulfur. For Diesel innova, Toyota recommends API CF-4 and CF but may also use CD, CE rating and CI-4 and CH-4 can be used in place of CD & CE Diesel API ratings! Most oil still carry the old CF-4, CF rating which is the recommended diesel oil for Innova.
Obsolete: API CG-4, CF-4, CF-2, CF, CE, CD-II, CD, CC
Current: API CJ-4, exceeds perfomance of CI-4 CI-4, CG-4, CH-4 but not for higher than 15ppm suflur,
Current: API CI-4 can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4 plus
Current: API CH-4 can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4
For Innova, Diesel if you have a driver, Gasoline if you're the one driving. My cousin mentioned problem with his strada. Lahat clog diesel fuel system(Filter) For smaller car, Gas is ok kasi liit lang naman difference in terms of fuel consumption. Innova gas has timing chain, Diesel has the timing belt. Diesel has P500 cheap fuel filter but needs changing frequently to prevent SCV problems kasi nga of our dirty diesel . Gas has P3,000+ fuel filter but would last at least 80K as per owners manual. PMS you can go every 10K for gas innova with no warranty issues basta synthetic. Pag consume more than 15K every year, diesel siguro. Less than that, you can go for a gas innova. Pag diesel, just get rid, sell it when it's time to change the timing belt at 100K para less worry sa maintenance.
I have here a lot of mobil1 5W-30 SM SN CF rating. I use this oil for my pick up truck. So its safe to use this for the innova as well? Looks like i need to sweet talk my service advisor to allow me to bring in my own oil with the corkage fee
