November 7th, 2014 09:25 AM #251The basic function of a shock absorber is to keep the vehicles tires in contact with the road. The shock absorber regulates the movement of the spring ensuring a smooth and more importantly safe ride. Even with new tires and new brakes, unless all shock absorbers are in good working order vehicle safety is compromised because of reduced wheel contact with the road.
With springs but faulty shock absorbers, the vehicle is able to absorb bumps, but the undampened suspension means that the vehicle continues to bounce and causes the tires to leave the road.
Check out this animation video. Top car has no or faulty shock absorber. Bottom car has good shock absorber.

I have a 2000 Corolla GLi that still does the lower animation. Been observing this when taking humps, it would do the 1 bounce, a little overshoot then settle.
However, lately it's been bottoming when I have 5 pax inside, where before it wouldn't. Could it be that the springs has become softer and needs replacement. Odo is 205K Km already. I last changed the struts, shock mount, ball joint, dust covers and lower spring insulator at 120K Km from OEM to KYB Excel G and replacement parts.
There is also noise on the front when it actuates when driving over humps as I drive off in the morning. A few more humps later, wala na. No noise sa rear.
I don't see any leaks on the struts also, but my bump stop/dust covers are already damaged. Palit na rin ng front struts?
I'm thinking to change all the struts, springs, bump stop/dust cover and shock mounts and inspect/replace worn out ball joint, tie rod, rack ends and stab links.
How are the spring rates of the replacement springs compared to stock. Nagdadalawang isip ako baka magiba ang ride height/tayo and ride.

Dati kahit one bounce lang sya, malaki yung down and up motion. Ngayon konti na lang.
Mas stable din sa highway speed.

Yung mga gas charged shocks lang ang nag-eextend by itself pag cinompress. Koni shocks for example, don't. Akala ko nung una sira pero ganun pala talaga pag emulsion type non gas charged shock. Most OEM shocks are low pressure gas charged.
*frost2
Mahal yun, maybe if your shocks are expensive ones like Bilstein, Koni it might be worth it. If you're selling it anyway you could check out KYB, they might be around the same price.
