Tama, pang warm up ulit? o baka this time duguan naman ang mukha ni Pacman? pansin ko parang madaya lumaban si Hatton e, pero sa huling laban niya napansin ko iba na diskarte niya

Klitschko beats Rahman to retain IBF heavyweight title

12/14/2008 | 06:25 PM

MANNHEIM, Germany – Wladimir Klitschko successfully defended his IBF heavyweight crown by stopping Hasim Rahman in the seventh round at SAP Arena on Saturday.

Klitschko hit the shorter, older and heavier Rahman at will throughout, and after landing a left-right-left combination against the cornered American, referee Tony Weeks stepped in to end the contest 44 seconds into the round. Rahman didn't appear upset.

Klitschko had knocked down Rahman in the previous round with successive left hooks in the one-sided bout before more than 10,000 spectators.

The technical knockout in Klitchsko's sixth defense of the IBF belt — and third this year — improved the Ukrainian-born fighter to 52-3 with 46 KOs. He hasn't lost in more than four years.

Rahman, the two-time heavyweight champion who stepped in as a replacement opponent only last month, struggled to get inside the taller Klitschko's reach, and dropped to 45-7-2.

"He fought a very smart, intelligent fight," said Klitschko's trainer, Emanuel Steward. "Wladimir was very smart not to throw too many punches and to be very patient and to work behind his left jab."

From the beginning, it soon became apparent that Rahman was struggling to overcome the 9-centimeter (3½-inch) height advantage enjoyed by the champion. Rahman had to lean in drastically to find openings, and Klitschko easily fended off his few punches.

"I was surprised, but he was much slower," Klitschko said.

Rahman did little more than lean on the ropes for a time and guard his face. He looked reinvigorated in the fourth round, using his whole torso to make ambitious attacks, often connecting with Klitschko's body.

But he rarely landed blows above Klitschko's shoulders, and the consequences were clear when Klitschko dropped Rahman early in the sixth with two hard lefts to the side of his head. Rahman got up but spent the remainder of the round in the corner, taking a sustained beating.

Another flurry at the opening of the seventh ended 36-year-old Rahman's challenge.

Klitschko, 32, also retained the minor WBO and IBO belts.

Klitschko was originally scheduled to face Alexander Povetkin (16-0), but the Russian pulled out with an ankle injury.

Klitschko believed there was enough rising talent in the division to be challenged, citing Povetkin, fellow Russian Nikolai Valuev, and American Cristobal Arreola. He also mentioned British boxer David Haye, who monopolized the post-fight press conference with a challenge to Klitschko's older brother, Vitali, the WBC champion.

"I want to fight him because he's the big one," Haye said. "He in my opinion is the best fighter."

Vitali Klitschko said he might fight Haye in 2009.

"I would gladly fight against him," Vitali Klitschko said.

On the undercard, former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe won an 8th-round points decision over Germany's Gene Pukall. It was just the third fight in a decade for the 41-year-old American and his first in three years.

Bowe (45-1, 33 KOs) had been training in Germany since September in an effort to get his stamina up and his weight down. The work paid off in the ring, where he kept up with 33-year-old Pukall (14-13-2, 12KOs) and bested him with an unshowy stream of careful head shots. - AP

ZURICH – Four-time world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield will be fighting for all the world's 40-somethings when he takes on towering Russian WBA champion Nikolai Valuev this weekend, he said on Wednesday.

Holyfield, 46, is bidding to become the oldest heavyweight champion when he fights in Zurich on Saturday against the tallest and heaviest boxer to hold a world title belt.

As well as being 11 years younger than Holyfield, Valuev is 24 centimeters taller -- at 2.13 meters -- and expected to be some 100 pounds heavier than his American opponent.

"His head is exactly where it needs to be for me to hit it," Holyfield (42-9-2) shrugged when asked at a Wednesday media conference about the difference in the two men's statures.

"I honestly do not think that size really matters. It is about how each individual fights. I know I have more experience so I'm just looking forward to showing my talents in the ring."

For some critics, Holyfield's 'experience' is simply a euphemism for being too old to box, a view that the fight's promoters labored hard on Wednesday to dispel.

"We've been criticized from all sides for letting him box," acknowledged organizer Wilfried Sauerland.

"But it was Evander who came to us asking for this fight and we said 'ok, but you will have to go through extensive medical tests' which he did and passed with flying colors.

"He has built up a reputation as a warrior and I think he will put up a very good fight against Valuev."

Holyfield said on Wednesday he had lost count of the number of times he had been asked about his age but paid no attention.

"I'm happy to talk about my age, and let people look at me and say 'wow, he looks as good as any of the younger fighters'.

"It's a testimony to good living and to not quitting, so my aim is to go and win this fight for all the 40-somethings out there and prove that it's not really fair to put people all in the same pot based purely on their age."

While downplaying Valuev's height advantage, Holyfield acknowledged that he had been working with some oversized sparring partners, including the aptly-named 2.16-meter tall Julius Long, in preparation for Saturday's fight.

"It's not something that I'm worrying about though," Holyfield insisted.

"If he were ten feet tall he would still be a man and this world is not run just by big people or small people. It's run by the people who make the right decisions at the right time."

Fully prepared

The Valuev camp, meanwhile, said that the Russian was fully-prepared for Saturday's fight.

"Nikolai has been working constantly on his technique," said coach Alexander Zimin. "He's become stronger, he's hitting faster and faster and he's improving with every day.

"I'm sure Holyfield's team is going to be waiting for the first mistake from Nikolai, but there isn't going to be one."

Valuev (49-1-0) acknowledged that Holyfield's reputation had impressed him but said there was no chance he would be overawed.

"At first I thought 'wow, Holyfield!' but I'm done with that now," the Russian said. "Names aren't what win fights and he is a boxer just like anyone else.

"Of course, we talked about his age a bit in our training sessions but I don't think that or the height difference are going to be decisive. It will be about who has prepared best and who can use his experience the most."

Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton Nearly Done - May 2

By Mark Vester

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has revealed that a mega-clash between Manny Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 KOs) and Ricky Hatton (45-1, 32 KOs) is close to a done deal for May 2, with Las Vegas being the frontrunner to host the event. The fight will take place at the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds.
"I'm encouraged by the way it's going, and I'm talking to the Hattons (on Friday) again," Schaefer said to the AP. "You really have two of the most popular fighters of their generation fighting each other, and that's the kind of fight we want to make."
After Pacquiao knocked out Oscar De La Hoya on December 6 and Hatton was able to stop Paulie Malignaggi in November - both fighters focused on each other. Schaefer says the rabid fans of Pacquiao and the wild Manchester crowd that follows Hatton by the thousands will make the fight a global event. Golden Boy, along with Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank, are pushing for the fight to land in Las Vegas.
"This is a fight with tremendous global appeal, and both of them have built up a very strong following here," Schaefer said. "With Manny's following in Asia and Ricky's support in Europe, you could say Las Vegas is the center of everything."

Valuev beat Holyfield in controvesial fashion.

Raw deal gives Holyfield false hope

ZURICH, Switzerland -- Three judges decided that 46-year-old Evander Holyfield lost by a majority points decision in his bid to claim the WBA heavyweight title from Nikolai Valuev. This and the almost reverential chants from 12,500 fans of "Hol-y-field, Hol-y-field," which echoed throughout the Hallenstadion in Zurich, represented the most dangerous verdict for a man whose delusions are verging on the deranged.
