LOS ANGELES (AP)—Four people were arrested after detectives discovered a burglary in progress at the home of champion boxer Manny Pacquiao while he was in his native Philippines preparing for a fight, authorities said Saturday.

Nothing was taken and no one was home Friday during the midday break-in that detectives witnessed by chance in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker said.

Pacquiao is in the Philippines training for a November fight.

The fighter was informed of the burglary and will proceed to his training base in the northern resort city of Baguio to prepare for his third fight against Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, his attorney and chief of staff Franklin Gacal said.

Gacal said the break-in occurred when a security guard who oversees the house had gone out to eat.

`’Manny is happy that nothing was stolen,” Gacal said.

The area is patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department, but detectives from the Sheriff’s Department were in the area on an unrelated criminal investigation when they saw the home being burglarized and made the arrests, Parker said.

The four people were being questioned. Their names have not been released and they have yet to be charged.

Pacquiao, 32, has won 14 straight fights and is considered by many the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world and among the greatest of all time. He is a megastar in the Philippines, where he is also a singer, actor and congressman.

Bakit ang daming nanggagliti na mga pinoy ngayon? Yun mga laban ni pacman meron din naman ma scipted eh yun kay clottey if thats nit "scripted" ewan ko lang. Saka akala ko wala pakialam kay gayweater mga pinoy? Eh bakit mas galit pa tayo? Lol

Actually pare pareho lang gayweather at pactard fans, pero di matatapos ang away na yan hanggat hindi naghaharap sa ring yung 2. Kaya dapat talaga magharap na nang matapos na ang lahat at maka move on na.

E kaso may isang umiiwas...naku ayan nanaman paulit ulit nanaman nyahahaha...

Ward beats Pacquiao, Donaire for Fighter of the Year nod

MANILA, Philippines – World super middleweight champion Andre Ward of the United States was named by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) as the 2011 Fighter of the Year.

“Ward was chosen by an overwhelming margin over nominees Nonito Donaire, Wladimir Klitschko, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao,” the BWAA said in an announcement on its website.

Ward won the Super Six super-middleweight tournament in 2011, defeating Carl Froch via unanimous decision in the finals.

The super-middleweight champion remains undefeated in his career with a 25-0 record, with 13 wins coming by knockout. Ward is rated in the top 5 of most pound-for-pound lists.

Ward’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, copped the BWAA Trainer of the Year award.

Pacquiao won the Fighter of the Year award in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and was also named the BWAA’s Fighter of the Decade.

Mayweather won the award in 2007, while Donaire has never won the award in his career.

Ward has already been named as the 2011 Fighter of the Year by ESPN and Sports Illustrated, with ESPN giving Pacquiao and Donaire honorable mentions for the title.

Mayweather to fight Cotto May 5 in Las Vegas

(Reuters) - Floyd Mayweather Jr. will challenge Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto for the World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight title on May 5, less than a month before the American is due to report to jail.

Mayweather had requested that his three-month prison sentence for domestic battery be postponed until June so that he could compete in one more bout, an appeal that was granted by a Las Vegas judge earlier this month.

That bout was widely expected to be a long-awaited mega-showdown with Filipino Manny Pacquiao to decide the mythical title of the world's best pound-for-pound fighter but the fighters' promoters could not agree on the date.

Instead, Mayweather will step up in class from his customary welterweight and take on three-division world champion Cotto at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

"Miguel Cotto is a world-class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing," Mayweather, 34, said in a statement on Wednesday.

"It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder.

"I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again and Cotto's reign as champion will come to an end on May 5," added the American, a seven-time world champion in five weight classes.

Mayweather, a flamboyant boxer regarded as the best defensive fighter of his generation, improved his perfect professional record to 42-0 by claiming the WBC welterweight title from Victor Ortiz in September.

Cotto, 37-2 (30 KOs), successfully defended his WBA super welterweight crown with a 10th-round technical knockout win over Antonio Margarito in December.

"I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing," the Puerto Rican said of the May 5 bout in Las Vegas. "I've never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me.

"I have accepted everything to give the fans what they like ... great and exciting fights. That is what the sport of boxing is all about."

The jail sentence Mayweather faces stems from a case in which he pleaded guilty in December to one charge of felony battery and no contest to two counts of harassment from a 2010 attack on his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and verbal threats against two of his children with Harris.

Mayweather was sentenced to six months for that outburst, but the judge suspended half the jail term.
