Banal KOs Tanzanian foe in Rd 2; Amonsot wins

    abs-cbnNEWS.com | 05/17/2009 12:15 AM

Quite similar to Manny Pacquiao’s victory over Ricky Hatton, AJ “Bazooka” Banal walloped Tanzanian foe Mbwana Matumla with a huge left hook to win by second round knockout in their “Tuloy ang Pagsubok” fight at the Cebu Coliseum Saturday night.

Matumla could not match Banal’s aggressiveness as he fell flat on his back after absorbing a gigantic left hook followed with a right uppercut from the Filipino.
The referee finished counting out Matumla 2:59 minutes into the second round.
“Hindi ko naman hinahanap ang knock out, pero bigla na lang dumating,” said Banal.
The win gave Banal a strong chance to fight in the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez fight in July.
“Asahan ninyong paghahandaan ko iyon,” he said.
Banal's win was comparable to Pacquiao's win on May 2 when he demolished Hatton in just two rounds.
Banal now has a 19-1 record while Matumla fell to 18-4.
    Amonsot decisions Chule
In the co-feature, Czar Amonsot won a 10-round decision over Morris Chule of Kenya in an ugly fight marred by a lot of clinching from both fighters.

Ring judges scored the fight 96-94, 97-93, 97-93 all in favor of Amonsot.
Although Amonsot landed the cleaner blows it was Chule who won the crowd.
Things went ugly in the fight after the referee failed to control the excessive clinching by both boxers midway the match.
Apart from the clinch, Amonsot punched Chule after the bell in at least two occasions.
By Round Six, Chule was already losing steam especially after he absorbed a right uppercut that threw him to the ropes.
The Kenyan, however, was able to survive in the final bell.
With the win, Amonsot climbed to 20-3-1 while Chule fell to 11-7-2.

Machida KOs Evans in UFC 98

    abs-cbnNEWS.com | 05/24/2009 8:47 PM

Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida claimed his first MMA title with a second round knockout of Rashad "Suga" Evans Saturday night in the UFC 98 main event.

Machida sent Evans down with a straight left in the second round with 1:30 left, which Evans tried to shake off. A ferocious overhand right followed by a left hook finally sent Evans back to the canvass with referee Mario Yamasaki stopping the fight at 3:57.

Machida, the new UFC light heavyweight champion, told Ufc.com, "If you have a dream, go hard, it’s possible."

“I tried all my life to be champion and I am very, very happy,” he said. “Now I want to keep this belt for a long time.”

The victory improved Machida's record to 15 wins and zero losses while Evans absorbed his first loss in 20 fights. “This is my first time on the other side,” Evans said of his first loss in his career. “You got to take it how you give it. Maybe next time I’ll do better.”

In the other main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Matt Hughes defeated Matt Serra after scoring a unanimous decision on the judges scorecards.

The former welterweight champions slugged it out in the Octagon for 15 minutes. In the end, the scores were 29-28 across the board for Hughes.

Hughes now has a record of 44-7 while Serra is at 16-6.

up next for machida is shogun rua. i feel rua is still not his old self when he destroyed his opponents during his pride fighting days. imo a prime rua can handle machida.

rampage should polish his wrestling if he ever wants to seriously challenge machida.

Cotto retains WBO title with win over Clottey

By DAVE SKRETTA, AP Sports Writer 4 hours, 44 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP)—Under normal circumstances, the brutal fight that Miguel Cotto and Josh Clottey waged on the eve of the national Puerto Rican Day parade might have left fans clamoring for a rematch.
Then again, with Manny Pacquiao sitting ringside, economics might prevail.
Overcoming a grisly early cut from an accidental headbutt and several ferocious rounds from Clottey, the gutsy Cotto fought to a narrow split decision Saturday night. He not only retained his WBO title inside a packed Madison Square Garden, he may have earned a big-money shot at Pacquiao, the reigning pound-for-pound king.
“The people have to wait until I rest a little bit,” Cotto said, smiling through a face that was little more than a swollen mess.
“I think it’s just rest now,” Cotto said, “and after that I’ll talk to the company.”
With blood pouring down it from the fourth round on, the pride of Caguas and the roughly 800,000 New Yorkers who trace their roots to his island nation threw his arms up at the end of a close and exhilarating bout that left both fighters battered.

Referee Don Trella scored the fight 116-111 and John McKaie 115-112, both for Cotto, while Tom Miller had it 114-113 for Clottey. The Associated Press scored it 116-112 for Cotto.
“You have to use your skills and you have to use your mind,” Cotto said. “I understood if I’m moving the last four or five rounds, I’m going to get the victory, because I’m in front of the fight. If I keep working I’m going to get the win.”
Clottey was so devastated by the narrow loss that he screamed after the decision, “Oh no! This can’t happen.” Then he went to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and said, “That’s it, I quit, I’m done with boxing. I can’t take it anymore.”
Arum told Clottey that he fought “a magnificent fight and you have to continue.”
Cotto doesn’t exude the same kind of charisma of the great Puerto Rican fighters who came before him, champions such as Wilfredo Gomez and Felix Trinidad. But the soft-spoken Cotto still has a certain charm that seems to endear him to the 17,734 who poured out Saturday night in support.
The Garden was filled more than two hours before his fight went off, the red, white and blue flags flying above the multicolored seats of this mecca of boxing.
Cotto (34-1) got the fight going at his pace early, keeping his distance and trying to stay away from Clottey’s signature body shots. Near the end of the first round, the champion landed a quick right hook that sent Clottey to the floor—a rare occurrence, if it’s ever happened at all.
The Ghana native never appeared hurt, and the two spent most of the next two rounds jabbing at each other. With seconds to go in the third, though, Clottey trapped Cotto against the ropes and they clashed heads, opening a deep gash along the champion’s left brow line. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. gave the ringside physician extra time to examine it between rounds before allowing Cotto to continue.
“It got worse in the ninth and 10th rounds,” physician Anthony Curreri said. “It started bleeding a lot more, but at the beginning of the round he’d go out every time and it’d be dry. But I’d tell him, ‘We’ll see how it goes.”’
With chants of “Cotto, Cotto” reverberating through the Garden, the gritty Puerto Rican wiped the blood from his eye and summoned the courage to keep on the attack.
“Guts, just guts” Arum said. “He could have taken the easy way out, because early on he was clearly ahead on points.”

Cotto came out strong in the fifth round, and the two wound up boxing into the corner. When Cotto dove in to wrap his arms around Clottey (35-3), he spun him around and Clottey ended up falling face-first on the canvas, where he lay for several moments as Cotto stood calmly in a neutral corner.
The ringside doctor said Clottey hurt his right knee, and he seemed to be favoring it as he walked around. But after jogging and bouncing in place, Clottey elected to continue.
Turned out to be a poor choice.
Cotto had a big sixth round, trapping the challenger in the corner and forcing Mercante to yell “Josh, defend yourself!” And although Clottey had a few good moments, especially in the ninth round, Cotto asserted his immeasurable will during the championship rounds to seal the victory.
“They robbed me,” Clottey said. “The winner of the fight is the one who’s supposed to be fighting hardest. He was running and I was chasing. I threw the hardest punches. People said I’d lose the decision if it went to a decision, and it did. They robbed me.”

Calderon keeps title after draw with RP's Mayol

    06/14/2009 | 10:54 AM

NEW YORK — Ivan Calderon retained his world junior flyweight title after an accidental headbutt forced a stop to his fight against the Philippines' Rodel Mayol and the judges declared it a draw on Saturday.

Making his fourth defense of his 108-pound (49-kilogram) crown, Calderon (32-0-1) spent the early rounds dancing around Mayol. Then in the fourth round, the two fighters banged heads, opening a cut on Calderon's forehead.

"I was coming in slow and I would go down low," Calderon said, "and that's when I got hit."

The cut became worse in the fifth round when both fighters came together again, and blood began pouring down the Puerto Rican champion's forehead — even though Mayol (25-3-1) appeared unfazed by the clashes. The referee stopped the bout to look at Calderon's cut, allowed the fight to continue, then moments later consulted with a ringside physician.

"The blood started to come down," Calderon said. "The referee told me he might have to stop the fight and I said, 'That's your decision.' I got hit twice in the head. Every time he was coming in, he was coming in down low and he'd hit me in the head."

After a few moments in his own corner and with a partisan crowd inside Madison Square Garden growing restless, Calderon was allowed to continue. He came out with a flurry of punches, clearly aware that the referee might stop the action and the decision would go to the scorecards.

That's exactly what happened in the sixth round, when the fight was stopped at the 1:50 mark.

Judge Tony Palillo scored the bout 58-56 for Calderon, and Tom Schreck had it 58-56 for Mayol. With the crowd rising to its feet, ring announcer Michael Buffer said that Steve Weisfeld had scored it a 57-57 draw. Weisfeld gave the final round to Calderon, allowing him to keep his title.

The Associated Press scored the fight 58-56 for the 34-year-old Calderon.

"I'm very disappointed," said Mayol, a Filipino who was promoted by countryman Manny Pacquiao. "I thought I won the fight. As soon as he heals up, I hope they let me fight him again."

That may take some time, considering Calderon's recent history.

The slick, defensive fighter, who had been 16-0 in world title fights, received a ghastly cut in a similar location in a defense against Hugo Cazares last August. Calderon wasn't fit to fight again until January, and this was his first time in the ring in almost 10 months, on the undercard of Miguel Cotto's welterweight title fight against Joshua Clottey.

"The fight was going the way I wanted," Calderon said. "It was back and forth and even, but I was starting to get hot and trading a lot more punches."

Also on the undercard, rising middleweight prospect Matt Korobov (6-0, 5 KOs) won a lopsided unanimous decision over Loren Myers (7-3). The two-time world amateur champion, who is being fast-tracked by promoter Top Rank, could fight again on a pay-per-view card in two weeks in Atlantic City.

Rafael Guzman (22-1) also earned a close split decision over Juan Carlos Martinez (14-10-1), a fight that shouldn't have been that tough for the Mexican featherweight. - AP

ganyan talaga ang boxing business bro. matagal na yan kaya dapat ndi ka na nagugulat.

bihira ka makakita ng boxers na magkaiba ng promoter (e.g. arum and don king) na maglalaban sa isang belt.

    Klitschko hands Chagaev first defeat

    Reuters | 06/21/2009 9:17 AM

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany – Ukraine's Vladimir Klitschko retained his world heavyweight titles by handing Uzbek fighter Ruslan Chagaev his first defeat thanks to a technical knockout after the ninth round on Saturday.

Klitschko, 33, held on to his IBF, IBO and WBO belts when the referee stopped the fight before the start of the 10th round in front of 61,000 fans with the WBA champion-in-recess bleeding from a large cut above his left eye.

"Tonight we, my team and I, beat a reigning world champion and you were here to witness it," Klitschko told the cheering crowd in the sold-out Schalke 04 soccer stadium.

"You cannot underestimate Chagaev. He's a terrific fighter. Today he did everything to beat me but I was better," he added.

Standing 1.99 meters tall, Klitschko initially held the challenger, who is 14 centimeters shorter, at bay with his longer reach before knocking his opponent down with a powerful left-right combination midway through the second round.

Unable to get close to the champion, Chagaev, who had a 25-0-1 record going into the fight, took a series of punishing jabs that slowly chipped away at his defenses.

    Large cut

He suffered a three centimeter cut above his left eye in the sixth round but battled on gamely.

Chagaev, 30, who did not face WBA champion Nikolai Valuev after the Russian pulled out of their fight late last month because the Uzbek had the hepatitis B virus, managed to come back and landed a couple of body blows.

But Klitschko dominated in the eighth and ninth rounds, repeatedly forcing Chagaev to the ropes and landing dozens of punches as his shaken opponent's eye bled profusely.

Referee Eddie Cotton inspected the wound after the ninth round and decided to stop the fight in favor of the Ukrainian whose impressive performance takes him to 53-3-0.

Klitschko, whose brother Vitaly holds the WBC crown, was initially scheduled to fight David Haye before the Briton pulled out with an injury earlier this month.

Chagaev admitted he struggled against a better opponent.

"I searched for the keys to unlock a win but I just could not find any," he said.

"Today was just not my day. Today it was Vladimir's day."

Kala ko di ito matutuloy dahil may hepa raw si Chagaev...
