Just how much COVID immunity you get after being exposed to the coronavirus varies, experts say. Free rapid COVID-19 test kits sit in a box as they await to be handed out to residents at Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia's office in El Cerrito.


Say someone in your house gets COVID. Maybe it’s your kid, your partner, your roommate. But you never seem to catch it, despite the exposure.

Still — does that close encounter with the virus give you any immunity?

It’s complicated, experts say.

To really generate immunity, experts said, the virus needs to get into your system in some way, which likely means that, if you’re testing regularly after exposure, you’ll test positive for the virus.

“The exposure has to mean something, it has to have gotten in your nose and penetrated so that your white (blood) cells see it,” said Dr. Julie Parsonnet, an infectious disease specialist at Stanford University. “Unless (the virus) establishes a niche in you, you are unlikely to get any benefit from it.”

For some, that might be an asymptomatic infection, said Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert at UCSF. Even if you never have symptoms, she explained, the infection does boost immunity — so even if you end up getting infected again later on, the illness won’t be as bad.

Gandhi said that breakthrough infections, which occur after vaccination, produce antibodies to the virus that provide some protection against reinfection, and generate a response by T cells, or memory cells, that are protective against severe illness. The T cells also are better at fending off different variants because they target a different part of the virus than antibodies.

“Once you gain cellular immunity to a virus, you should be generally protected against severe disease in the future; repeated exposures may cause mild illness but will deepen your immunity,” she wrote in an email.

But the level of immunity you get against another infection likely corresponds with how severe your infection was, experts said. So your asymptomatic infection could still give you some immunity against catching COVID again, but that immunity likely wouldn’t last as long as it would for someone who had a worse bout of it.

“There’s lots of evidence showing that it’s a graded response for the immune system,” Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at UCSF, explained. “The more serious your illness, the more robust your immune response.”

If the virus never enters the body, you probably won’t produce any kind of immune response, Chin-Hong said. If you’re testing regularly after the exposure at the right time — at least five days after close contact with the infected person, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — and you never test positive, it’s unlikely you’ll see any immunity.

There’s also an open question about how biology might affect whether you ever get infected. Some people, for example, might have the right kind of mucus or nasal receptors that prevent the virus from ever getting in the body, Parsonnet explained.

“The fact that you didn’t get infected may suggest that you have some innate immunity that other people don’t have,” she said. “But I wouldn’t count on it, because it seems like almost anybody who is exposed can get sick.”

Chin-Hong agreed, adding that there’s more to be studied on this.

“A lot of people have been looking at why some people don't get it, even though they have the same exposures as other people,” he said. “It might be due to a bunch of factors, things we don't understand yet, like genetics and the immune system in some people versus others.”

Doctors also emphasized that none of this means people should try to get COVID in order to boost the immune response.
“We don't know yet about whether even mild infections can cause chronic problems,” Parsonnet said. “It's known that there are neurologic consequences to COVID. There may be long-term consequences we don’t know for 20 years. And so I don't advise people to use exposure as a strategy.”

“I don't think there's any evidence that getting COVID is good for you,” she added.

Concepcion concerned about vaccines about to expire

Concepcion earlier expressed alarm over the slow uptake of COVID-19 booster shots as available vaccines in the country are about to expire.

For Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III, the government should not force Filipinos to get their booster shots. He also asked the government and the general public not to be too trusting of “big pharma” or pharmaceutical companies manufacturing the vaccines.

"Forcing people to have booster shots just to have the issue of expiring vaccines go away is wrong. Our problem is we are so much believers of big pharma that what they say, we always bite,” Pimentel said in Filipino and English.
