Fresh data show toll South African virus variant takes on vaccine efficacy | Reuters

The vaccines from Novavax Inc and Johnson & Johnson were welcomed as important future weapons in curbing deaths and hospitalizations in a pandemic that has infected more than 101 million people and claimed over 2 million lives worldwide.

But they were significantly less effective at preventing COVID-19 in trial participants in South Africa, where the potent new variant is widespread, compared with countries in which this mutation is still rare, according to preliminary data released by the companies.

“Clearly, the mutants have a diminishing effect on the efficacy of the vaccines,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said in a briefing. “We can see that we are going to be challenged.”

Novavax reported midstage trial results on Thursday that showed its vaccine was 50% effective overall at preventing COVID-19 among people in South Africa.

That compared with late-stage results from the United Kingdom, in which the vaccine was up to 89.3% effective at preventing COVID-19.

On Friday, J&J said a single shot of its coronavirus vaccine was 66% effective overall in a massive trial across three continents.

But there were wide differences by region. In the United States, where the South African variant was first reported this week, efficacy reached 72%, compared with just 57% in South Africa, where the new variant, known as B 1.351, made up 95% of the COVID-19 cases reported in the trial.

Another highly transmissible variant first discovered in the UK and now in more than half of U.S. states has been less able to evade vaccine efficacy than its South African counterpart.

Unless the pharma industries allow mass production of existing vaccines...

Which Covid Vaccine Should You Get? Experts Cite the Effect Against Severe Disease

The best way to stop the spread of mutants and to prevent more new ones from emerging is to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible, Fauci and other researchers say. Viruses cannot mutate unless they are replicating, and they cannot replicate unless they can get into cells. Keeping them out by immunizing people can shut down the process.

as i said yesterday Pfizer and Moderna don't have real world data of vaccine efficacy against South African variant coz their phase 3 trials took place earlier... before the emergence of South African variant

meron real world data ang J&J and Novavax coz their phase 3 trials took place later -- meron na SA variant

ang ginawa ng Pfizer and Moderna tinest nalang nila sa lab kung effective sa new variants ang bakuna nila

reduced effectiveness din pero kaya parin

sabi ko nga that E484 mutation is problematic (South Africa and Brazil variants meron E484 mutation)

who knows what other mutations the virus will come up with

later on baka below 50% nalang ang effectiveness ng mga vaccine

COVAX was supposed to provide vaccines for free pero di na daw free ang buong allocation coz kulang sila sa pondo

PH will need to pay for part of it daw

    ---

i was skeptical na when the gov't said 40 million doses ang matatanggap ng Pinas from COVAX (pfizer + astrazeneca)

ngayon lumabas na less than 10 million doses

    ---

Medyo skeptical parin ako sa bagong press release coz sa mga nababasa ko the manufacturers can barely keep up with global demand

Tama. Huwag muna tayong umasa na may darating na maraming vaccine sa CHINA WUHAN VIRUS na ito kung aasa lang tayo sa gobyerno na ito.

I have a bad feeling that the money loaned by this gobyerno for vaccine purchase has already been diverted elsewhere

Is the lender the one directly paying the manufacturer in behalf of the government?

I don't think that is the procedure as the loan has to be booked first in the records of the National Treasury before this is released to the manufacturer.

    Or am I wrong?

Now, if this passes through the National Treasury, hindi lahat gamitin pangbili ng vaccine para sa CHINA WUHAN VIRUS. Iba dyan i-divert to agencies, perhaps under some questionable virus response mechanism or program that will take years to unravel and audit. una sa lahat iba ung COVAX sa order ng gobyerno/LGU/private sector

mahirap na bansa charity case kasi ang pinas kaya makakatanggap tayo ng bakuna galing sa covax

wala ito kinalaman sa inorder ng gobyerno

foreign organizations contribute money to purchase vaccines from manufacturers --- That's the COVAX facility

then COVAX will distribute vaccines to POOR countries like PH

kaya duda ako sa figure ng gobyerno makakatanggap daw ng 40 million doses ang Pinas from COVAX

sa dami ng bansa kailangan tulungan may allocation ang pinas na 40 million doses?
