got the linksys wireless router that i ordered.

set it up as a wireless access point using the procedure from my previous post and is now posting in wireless mode.

question: how do i setup the security so my neighbors won't be able to use my wifi?

go to your router admin page and enable WEP. pag nakasetup na to kailangan ng PIN code for people to be able to connect.

in the admin page under the security, after i select WEP, ito ang lumabas:

    Security Mode: WEP
    Default transmit key: ()1 ()2 ()3 ()4
    WEP Encryption: 64 or 128bit
    Passphrase:
    Key 1:
    Key 2:
    Key 3:
    Key 4:

    ======

what is passphrase and keys 1 to 4?

what model linksys router nga pala? I think you enter the passphrase and it generates the keys for you? Di ko sure DLINK kasi router ko. hehe.
Meron ka bang option to use WPA? Mas ok daw to. But although mas ok WPA security, unless you have hacker neighbors eh ok na din siguro WEP.

    generally two ways:

    1. using WEP, you will set a pass-phrase in the router and it will give you a alpha-numeric code to type into the PC or device you want to connect to the WiFi router. Linksys routers will generate four alpha-numeric codes, any of them will be sufficient.

    2. using Machine Number, you will type in the machine number of the wireless device you want to connect. This is less secure but more easy because you will only configure the router and not the wireless device.

    Note:
pass-phrase could be anything like: "I love tsikot forums" to "I am a mothers boy"...

Machine number is like a serial number of the network device. Normally a unique machine number is assigned to each network device like a LAN card or WiFi device.

If I remember correctly, the options for machine number is located in the WIFI options of your Linksys wifi router. Choosing either to filter in or out specified machine numbers. You can check what machine number your devices are using by selecting and viewing the DHCP clients table list.

MAC address is the machine name of the network card for a laptop or computer. this is usually suffice to block-out unauthorized access to your network. if you use this type of security, others might actually see your network but they cannot access it.

for the WEP, unless otherwise a correct password is supplied unauthorized users cannot access your network.

people, eto ang di ko maintindihan e. tina-try ko i-enable yung WEP pero nagloloko yung connection ko pag may WEP. what am i doing wrong?

actually MAC Filtering is easier to implement... and gives slightly faster network transfer rates.

or you could be using different wifi security protocols.

actually even with WEP based security, other people can still see your wifi access point and associated data of that access point. At least that is what information I can scan using my nokia N80's wifi network scanner.

one of the reasons why I prefer NOT to use WEP security. With MAC filtering, its much simpler.

Usually I initially try connecting without any security then setup WEP or MAC filtering. Sometimes its as simple as wrong digit in the alphanumeric code used in the WEP.

will this be possible if i disabled SSID broadcast?

boybi, MAC Address is set (at least, in my Netgear Router) by scanning the wireless access list. using this, you'll be able to see which device is detected by the router. then, when you see the computer you want to give access to your network then add that particular computer. other than that, others who don't have the permission will not be able to access your network even if they can detect your network.

all and still, i want to try the WEP. try lang.

also, i'll try turning of my SSID broadcast.

ang globe broadband i think is PPPOE, while ang smartwifi/bro uses dynamic IP. may option naman sa router for you to choose.

usually meron naman setup wizard mga routers, gamitin mo nalang para mas mabilis magconfigure.
