Convert those to laptops when you finally replace them
i gave my 2006 desktop to a computer tech student. nakagarahe ang isang desktop. i newly acquired a i3 desktop w/ windows 10. type ko ang desktop, madaling ayusin, madaling magpalit ng boards. palagay ko, nasanay ako sa desktops, old school type. my daughter wants to buy a laptop for portability, convenience and low power consumption. sabi ko, kwartahin na lang hehe
I had a RAM with 1860 mhz speed. Found out na 1330 lang kaya ng MoBo ko. Tried to install the 1860 RAM mg desktop wont turn on. How much MoBo this days? Bigay lang yung 8gb from.my friend
You can always manually select the RAM frequency through your BIOS. Just set it to 1333 MHz.
By default though, your board will run it at the highest speed it can. So even if it's a 1866 MHz stick, it will run at 1333 MHz by default.
Are you sure that the RAM is defective? Try other RAM slots, and make sure that your case/board isn't grounded.
Also try running your board without RAM. It should have multiple beeps to signify a "No Memory" error. Afterwards, try reseating your RAM. If it really doesn't run, that's when you try a different stick of RAM.

I wish CPU and GPU development would accelerate to encourage cooler chips. That way they can fit in small packages. I really like the way the Mac Mini was designed although I still prefer the classic design which has an optical drive.

The intel skylake chips with HD6000 aren't so bad. I tried team fortress 2 on the macbook air and its decent. I'm thinking two more generations and they'd be really capable. Right now they have slightly more power than that of a discreete nvidia 920m
Has anyone here set up a home HPC cluster? i've wanted to do this for a long time, but i can't find a good enough excuse ^_^
My most recent inventory......
Desktop computers:
AMD FX-8350/4Gb GTX 770 - my desktop PC
Intel i5 4670k/4Gb R9 290x - my eldest kid's desktop PC
AMD A10-7850k/2Gb R9 380 - my youngest kid's desktop PC
AMD Phenom II X3 720BE/GT 730 - my Linux box
2006 Mac Mini
2011 Mac Mini
As of this I still have them. The kids still prefer to use them for school work over their assigned laptops.
They love the 22-inch LED monitor that we paired with their desktops.... and the worktable too....
If you'll be using your NUC for gaming, why not the Zotac EN970? It already comes with a GTX 960 GPU which is far better than Intel's Skylake iGPU.
Sure it doesn't have a quad-core, but the i5-5200U is sufficient for HTPC and gaming use. It's also cheaper - 37k for the barebones model, then just add your own RAM and SSD, it should still come out cheaper than the NUC6i7KYK.

So long as there is a need for content creation, I think desktop computers will endure. Laptops do a good job. But, desktops are still more economical especially when it comes to upgrading and recycling components.
From my own experiences, creating content (eg spreadsheets, documents) are still best done with keyboard and mouse. Even my laptop has a separate wireless mouse as a minimum. The touchpad isn't ideal for productivity.
Edit:
I also suggested to the kids that they have a choice of sticking with desktops or going with laptops. Both preferred sticking with desktops. Actually, they wanted both. But, that's not going to happen if I have a say in it. So, they had to choose. They chose desktops plus their tablets.
The wife agreed to give up desktops and stick with her laptop and tablet. She still has her Mac Mini. But, it's not going to be replaced once its useful life is done.
Of course, they grumbled about me having all. Tough sh*t.![]()

We have been using Toshiba laptops since 2006, and genuine MS office products. Office 2016 now.
