Owner of a partially broken X240. Yeah that screen mounted LED does come in handy, i wish it would catch on with the cheaper laptops. Am also a fan of the Lenovo-type keyboard -- island-style keyboards are just weird ^_^

It's best then to buy a modern AMD APU-based PC.
I assembled a new PC for my youngest kid with the following specs:
The 7850K can play Crysis at Medium settings (Shaders at High), 1280x1024 with framerates solidly in the 30's and 40's. That's pretty good for a PC with no dedicated video card.
Edit:
I did install an old 8600 GT for PhysX. The main graphics driver is still the Radeon 7850K.

I used to hate gaming on laptops because the bang for the buck isn't good. Then they started coming down in price right about the time I decided I wanted to game while on vacation at relatives' homes or during a road trip.
I bought a 14" ASUS G46VW during one time when the wife let me spend. It's perfect for gaming after we pull into a motel for the night. It's a bit underpowered for a couple of games (The Witcher 3 and Far Cry 4). But most other games play fine.
For example, Crysis 3 is playable at High settings with FXAA:
It also has a backlit keyboard. But, I rarely use it.
It just occurred to me that it's been a little over 10 years since I first joined here. A before (2004) and after (2015) photos.
I think a lot of the computer guys that used to be here moved elsewhere although I'm not sure where.
The main difference is before, I had my own den. But, we had another kid since then. She now has her own room. So now, my current den is really a guest room. I have to vacate it when relatives stay over.

Nice....i remember that subwoofer hehehe. Z2300? I think.
I cant wait for AMD fury woooo
Yup. It's the same Z-2300 2.1 from 2005. It still works great and I tend to keep things (and not buy new stuff) as long as they are working.
I stuck with AMD up to now. I have an FX-8350 paired with a 4 Gb GTX 770. I'm contemplating moving back to Intel. But, we'll see. I'm satisfied with the FX-8350 for now.

Of course not. He He.
My "monitor" is a Dynex 24" (60 Hz) 1080p TV I bought from Best Buy back in 2010. I'm not really bothered by screen tearing.
I also have it hooked up to my cable box.
I'm not that interested in the current PC gaming trends: 60 fps, 4k, etc. So long as I can play the game decently at the display's native resolution, I'm happy. Heck, I still prefer to use VGA or DVI ports over HDMI.

Woah! Dual CRT monitors!
And a logitech flightstick!
I used to stick with FF joysticks (MS Sidewinder FF1 and 2, Logitech strikemasterpro). But eventually, the FF support on games started to become crappy. Most are just obligatory vibrations. I've since given up on FF and now have a regular garden variety flight stick.
Back in the Sidewinder FF days, the FF supported games has a wide range of FF effects. I have fond memories of playing EAW, the FF effects were spot on --- ex. a wing loses lift and I'm about to enter a stall/spin.
That was my setup in 2004. I had two Samsung 17" monitors. I used to have a MS Sidewinder 3D Pro from 1995. But, MS dropped support for it with Windows XP which is why I have a Logitech in the first place. I loved the Sidewinder 3D Pro. I still have my European Air War CD. I can run the game on Windows XP. But, the video chip must be ATI.
Nowadays, I play with MS Flight Simulator X, DCS: Black Shark, X-Plane 9, IL-2: Cliffs of Dover, and Aerofly FS. Lately, it's been the last two.

By the way, speaking of FSX -- is this use teh CPU more than the GPU?
I recently grabbed FSX during a steam sale and started flying around NAIA on an ultralight.
After an hour or so, my motherboard monitor started complaining that the CPU has breached the threshold.
I could play ROME2 all day with the settings maxed out and get no complaints from the CPU.
please comment
AMD A8-7600 + Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3 = 7800
Seagate HDD 1TB = 2700
Kingston fury 8GB DDR3 = 3700
Cougar SL 600W = 2400
TOTAL: 16,600
good deal or not?

Anyone getting rid of their P45 (LGA775) board? I need one that supports the Intel C2Q Q9550. My old board is starting to act up. I don't want to spend a large sum on a new PC as the performance on this one is just fine for what I do.
PCs are dead.
I want another i7 lappy with monster graphics instead at less than 40k
I just assembled an AMD A-series PC for my youngest kid:
A10-7850K 3.7 Ghz quadcore APU
Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-H motherboard
8 Gb DDR3-2133
1 Tb Western Digital Blue SATA hard drive
550w Thermaltake PSU 80 Plus Bronze
ASUS DVD-Writer
Two things to consider with my choices:
I went with Western Digital (WD) hard drives because I've had great experience with them. I started tracking my hard drive usage in 2000 and WD lasted the longest with one (2.5" IDE) dying in 9 years, another (3.5" IDE) in 13 years. Both of them died last year. The rest are still working to this day. That said, I have a number of Seagates because they're much cheaper. But, I expect them to have a shorter lifespan than WD hard drives.
Another thing to consider is the RAM type. An AMD APU will use system RAM as its VRAM. So, for me, it's best to get the fastest DDR3 RAM I can put in. Googling around, there is a 20% difference in gaming performance when using DDR3 2133 versus DDR3 1600.
My kid likes her Minecraft with mods. So, it made sense to have the faster RAM. For general computer use and lighter gaming, DDR3 1600 is fine.
It's hard to quantify if that PC is worth it because shop owners have to make a profit as well. To me, the price seems fair.

What m.2 pcie ssd drive is compatible with my asus rog g501. It has an m.2 pcie x4 slot. The plextor drive i installed shouldhave been recognized even if it was x2 only.
I have the original Microsoft FSX Gold and FSX Deluxe. FSX barely uses multicore. I think the more knowledgeable FSX players said the game depends on pure CPU speeds. It runs very well on my FX-8350 particularly when I have FSX windowed with several views. With a new video card alone, I barely got a few increases in framerates.
