Heard the news late last week about the PH cancelling the helicopter deal with Canada....now i just heard that Canada will not sell military equipment to any government with human rights issues. Just wondering which came first, and who's doing damage control.

Sir you may want to read my post again...or run it through a search and look for that particular word. Let's not spread fake news needlessly now. Kawawa naman ung fake news trolls mawawalan ng kita.

You're not one of them, are you? Apologies po if you are and please do carry on, magkakabilangan naman tayo in the end.Thank you.

Canada won't sell because the PH made representations and assurances the helicopters will be used for S&R only and not for anti-terror/anti-rebel operations.

Also, there are western countries who won't sell military equipment or anything that can be used militarily, for those countries with bad human rights records. The PH is lumped together with China, Saudi Arabia and Algeria insofar as Canada is concerned so its not as if we are being singled out.

Too bad the PH won't be getting the more advance choppers... I think we were able to procure eight with anoalogue instrumentation during PNoys time... and Digong rode on them often since 1 or two went to the Presidential Air Wing. Anyway they aren't configure for COIN operations since they are purely VIP and SAR operations. Kaya mas maganda talaga bumili sa China or Russian sources since walang strings attached.

^ yeah pero malamang yung "export" version ang ibebenta sa atin. They're wary of having their weapons being used against them.

It’s naive to think there are no strings when a government agrees to sell military equipment. There are strings. Just of varying lengths. China is willing to sell because the current admin is silent or not willing to touch on the ITLOS ruling on the SCS in favor of the PH. Russia wants to sell because they have limited trade options with US sanctions against them plus they believe they can rebalance U.S. Influence in the PH.

How populism is poisoning the global liberal order

Notwithstanding global anxieties over populists like U.S. President Donald Trump, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Hungary, there is still a surprising level of confusion about what is, and what is not, populism. While there are multiple definitions in circulation, populism can be distilled to three essential characteristics: popular but unsustainable policies; the designation of a specific population group as the sole "legitimate" members of a nation; and highly personalized styles of leadership emphasizing a direct relationship with "the people."

    there's a lot of anti-intellectualism, anti-science going on

    people no longer trust experts

people believe in pseudoscience and quackery

from the article posted by Monserrato:

    Access Denied
The future of the global liberal order hinges in large part on the direction of populism in the U.S. After all, the U.S. was the chief architect and custodian of the world order over the past 70 years. If the U.S. withdraws its support, then the order is likely to come unstuck.

the US isn't going to rein in autocrats

Trump himself has autocratic tendencies and his America First policy means the US will be looking after itself first

the US will no longer solve other countries' problems

Europe has its own problems like rising far right movement coz many citizens are angry at their governments for allowing millions of refugees into their countries

European governments just sat there watching Syria burn

They didn't do anything about Assad

now they're paying for the consequences of their inaction

    --

Western powers have their own problems

so even if the Phils. won the SCS arbitration case against China, nobody came to enforce it

they're not going to war with China just for us

    --

so du30 is being charged in ICC

let's say du30 is found guilty of crimes against humanity

    tapos?

    who's gonna enforce it?

    the Americans?

    the Europeans?

    --

    The West is tired

they didn't do anything about Russia taking Crimea

    they're afraid of Putin

and they can't do anything about China

this is now a multi-polar world

Russia and China aren't afraid of the West

and the West isn't going to war with Russia and China

    Just leaving this here:

Lawyer survives ambush, rams motorcycle-riding gunmen with SUV | Inquirer News

“Merong dalawang motorsiklo na involved sa alleged ambush. Itong SUV, galing sa EDSA, kakanan sana sa papuntang East Avenue, at inabangan siya at pinagbabaril. Hinabol niya at nasagasaan itong mga motor,” Eleazar, chief of the Quezon City Police District, told reporters in an interview at the crime scene.

The incident ended at EDSA’s northbound lane near Trinoma Mall in Quezon City, with Cabatbat managing to ram the two motorcycles with his SUV.

One gunman was killed. He was identified as PO1 Mark Boquela Ayeras, through his Philipine National Police ID.
So far this is the 5th? case where riding in tandem gunmen were confirmed to be police. Still don't believe PNP isn't involved in EJKs?

This happened on EDSA. Fricking EDSA.

Well golly gee, so i guess doubling cops' salaries does *not* deter them from doing illegal activities eh? Wow, i'm soooo surprised.

Ganyan naman talaga ang modus dati sa davao city. Kaya naging staple sa ganyan ang davao death squad

I was still living in davao city during the time the dds came into fore. I heard lots of stories about who was behind that "special squad" from davao's finest. They became a political tool used by politicians as much as a supposed "anti-criminal task force "
