this is how democracies die under populist leaders

"the slow and gradual nature of populist-fueled democratic backsliding is difficult to counter. Because it is subtle and incremental, there is no single moment that triggers widespread resistance or creates a focal point around which an opposition can coalesce"

"because populist leaders enjoy substantial popular support, they tend to have broad approval for many of their proposed changes"

because edsa 1 was an incomplete revolution

3 decades after edsa millions are still left behind

the people power revolt didn't return power to the people

the resentment built up thru the years resulted in du30 coming into power

now the admin is dismantling the (Cory) Aquino legacy piece by piece

the 1987 constitution, the form of govt

It's up to us then to avoid name-calling.

Mocking is fine as long as they only mock his actions.

    Dapat intelligent discussion.

They just can't transfer it to davao.

Almost all the business hubs are here in Manila.

There's a reason multi-national companies chose to be HQd here in Manila and i believe it's accessibility. Make fun of the MRT and LRT all we want but we can't deny na dito lang meron niyan wala sa probinsya.

We have a port here as well that is way more accessible to freighters than the one in davao.

we live in the Post-Truth World

"The rulers of backsliding democracies resent an independent press, but cannot extinguish it."

"modern strongmen seek merely to discredit journalism as an institution, by denying that such a thing as independent judgment can exist. All reporting serves an agenda. There is no truth, only competing attempts to grab power."

to say that this admin is made up entirely of stupid people is underestimating what they can do

    and this one:

House body wants amendment to free speech - CNN Philippines

Free speech is no longer absolute under a constitutional amendment proposed by a group of lawmakers.

They want to protect only the "responsible exercise" of free speech and expression as there has been "so much abuse" of this provision.

Yes. And through use of PDRs, they have no say in the management of the company. No votes in stockholders' meetings.

As such, PDRs are legal investment instruments through which foreigners can invest in Philippine corporations.. Both ABS-CBN and GMA use them.

The issue comes down to one set of PDRs that Rappler is using, that grants the holders veto power.

Even if the holders do not have any other management power, that constitutes a form of control over a local media outlet. Which is illegal.

In a sane world, this could be worked out between the SEC and Rappler, as this is a technicality that can be remedied (though who has the $50m to buy the PDRs off the foreign group, I wonder? )

Unfortunately, this is not a sane world.

On the other hand, if you're well connected, like Mighty Tobacco, you get away with simply paying a fine to avoid jail time for criminal tax evasion.

People are blaming the wrong people for what's wrong in this country.

The people behind what's wrong, on the other hand, are sitting back, gleefully, their hands still pulling the strings of the Tongressmen flinging poop around the halls of Congress.

    Plus ca change.

And who do they turn to?

A billionaire who inherited his wealth from Daddy.

Part of the 1% who cheat on taxes, bilk subcontractors and make ****ty business decisions that affect the lives of the little people.

    And:

A nepotistic strongman chummy with the family that ran off with billions of dollars in Swiss accounts, leaving us in a huge debt hole. One who's curiously frantic to convince the populace that China is our new BFFAEAEAE. (forever and ever and ever and ever).

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
