IMHO, this is the same reaction I have.
Look, we crucified Abaya because, even though what he said: "Hindi nakakamatay ang traffic" was also true for most motorists... as what Tugade is saying here... it's still a frigging insensitive thing to say to people who are ALREADY making adjustments and who are stretched thin doing so... people who voted in Duterte partially because he promised to reform transport and traffic.
I'm glad I no longer commute regularly between the metro and Laguna. Because when I do, it's purgatory. I already spend two to three hours on the road OFF-PEAK. If you're stuck with an inflexible schedule, tulog sa bus, luto after midnight, and the only time you see your kids is when you wake them up before you go to the bus station.
Lucky are the younger ones who have no kids and can still afford condos. Most... no luck at all.
They apologized because it was necessary.
Duterte did not curse Obama directly. And Obama understood that and took no offense. US security advisors train in the Philippines and understand the language (the STREET language, not just the formal language) much better than lowly news translators do. (I would tell you how I know, but I would have to kill you...)
But Obama also understood that Duterte was basically brushing him off. This is why he chose to postpone the meeting. Duterte should have said, more diplomatically, that he would talk to Obama, but he would not compromise his stance at the behest of a foreign government, since he is answerable only to his people.
Tapos.

Diplomacy is not a schoolyard fight wherein you are talking to bullies, idiots and sheep. This is the big league, and saying the right things is important.
Diplomacy will not get us very far with China. They are used to saying one thing and doing another. They are perfectly happy running billion dollar trade deals with Japan or Korea while at the same time staging fake anti-Japanese/Korean protests and spreading nationalist propaganda denouncing these trade partners. Hell... during the first Spratley disputes, Chinese friends related that Chinese media was demonizing Filipinos, saying they were beating up and killing Chinese in the streets.
We cannot negotiate over the WPS with China. China will stand firm on being first and foremost there, and if exploration talks begin, we will be left begging for table scraps. Western Allies will also act selfishly in joint-exploration, but we'll get a better deal there, IMHO.
Diplomacy with a two-faced devil? No thanks. Not that the US is not two-faced, but at least they're very polite about it.![]()
