It really is like a train wreck, isn't it? You know it's horrible but you can't look away.

That's why I never really took to FB. Reading the deluge of silly posts I read from family and friends felt like peeling off all the respect I had for them 1 layer at a time.

As for this diplomatic disaster, it's hard to imagine he can top this. Maybe it's all downhill from here?

It is even harder to imagine the magic his minions have to spin. I am totally disappointed at Cayetano. His father must be rolling over in his grave.

^ well, the alsa masa movement, of which duterte was a known affliliate, was pretty extreme and ritualistic back then ( i heard stories of them while i was living in davao city years back ) so maybe going beef jerkey on some of the rebels was considered hors d' oeuvre

Uhm... okay. First we have Abaya's "hindi nakakamatay ang traffic...". Now we have this. But do read the article and try to absorb his other point.

Reading through the article though, I agree with his comments that the mindset that everyone has to do their part is a big factor insolving the traffic woes: Planning trips, carpooling, driving and being mindful to other motorists to keep traffic flow moving well, etc.

Metro Manila traffic just a ‘state of mind’ | Inquirer News

T’S ALL in the mind, a transport official said of the country’s traffic situation.
It’s the Filipinos’ “state of mind” that actually worsens the country’s traffic situation, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade maintained on Tuesday, adding that using the traffic as a convenient excuse for tardiness has become a habit.
“Even when there (was) no traffic, (people say) there was,” the official scoffed during the launch of the premium bus service at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

“A state of mind adds to the problem of traffic,” he stressed. “Let’s stop blaming traffic. If you’re late, that’s that.”
Tugade added: “One thing we will have to address in solving traffic: change your psyche. Change your psyche (that allows) you to every now and then use as a convenient excuse that one word: traffic.”
Advised the transport official: “On our own we should change. We must learn to tell the truth. Let’s teach ourselves (to be truthful). That will be a good start.”
    Emergency powers
Tugade had previously asked Congress to grant emergency powers to President Duterte to resolve the traffic problem.
“We all know there is a traffic problem … (t)hat is why we are asking for emergency powers,” said Department of Transportation spokesperson Cherie Mercado.
“(But while) emergency powers will not solve everything in two or three years’ time, there are things that will be addressed right away and things that will be addressed (within the next) two years,” she added.
“Secretary Tugade’s and President Duterte’s type of leadership is basically ‘Let’s have a change of mindset.’ If we think that it’s always traffic and then we blame traffic (for being late), it’s our own (perception) that actually has (the effect of ) a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Mercado said.
“We would like to have the collective help of (all) Filipinos. Just having hope helps a lot, even in governance … . Let’s solve (the traffic problem) together. We’ll take care of the policies (and) implementation and you do the cooperation,” she added.

Are the Alsa Masa different from the group known as tadtad? Parang meron din grupo na ganun at anti-communist. The preferred weapon is the classic itak.

imho, people have been doing this na, they don't need to be preached upon any further. Some former officemates come in around 6am, then stay in the office til 8-9pm daily just to avoid traffic -- babawi na lang sa tulog until 8-9am. Some have bought a condo or rented a space near their offices, etc.

Me nakausap nanay ko sa bus while stuck in traffic. Taga Laguna daw siya, halos 3-4 hours ang biyahe. What she does is cook up a storm during the weekends, then puts them in the freezer. Pagpasok sa trabaho o school, kanya kanyang kuha ng baon...pag uwi ng asawa o anak, kanya kanyang init na lang. Their tiyaga is admirable, but i can't help but think about what little family time they have left. Ultimong weekend e busy sa pagluluto.

i once confided to my boss, buti ka pa, me tiyaga kang magbasa and magresearch. He told me he was lucky to be living within walking distance from work, on the other hand, other guys regularly get stuck in traffic for 3-4 hours, pagdating ng bahay, laspag na rin.

We will never be able to quantify the damage/cost of traffic.

Yes, this is a big problem, and people should be patient and adjust, but this is just a workaround -- people expect a lot more from their votes other than having to grin and bear it.

I would like to know how my Uncle in the US feels about his idol now. I almost deleted him on FB during election time for all his pro duterte posts, he is not even a Filipino citizen.

^ Dunno, maybe Duterte plans to cozy up with China/Russia.

Ang sa akin lang...as bad as it is being a "tuta" of the US, one should think hard about being a "tuta" to China/Russia. Lahat ng tulong, me kapalit yan -- who would you rather be indebted to?

A wise man once said: Diplomacy is the art of saying "nice doggie" until you can find a stick.

As things are, we still don't have a stick.

Yup. I made adjustments as well, but instead I come to work after rush hour. This messed up my health because I used to be a morning person (office by 8 am) Unfortunately there is no off peak hours in traffic anymore

to my knowledge they're different because the tad tads and their allies, the hilagas (i think the word hilaga means mouse in ilonggo? i'm not sure), were waging war on the muslim insurgents in davao, cotabato and in provinces further down south while the alsa masa people were going-up against communist rebels in davao city, particularly in agdao district , or in what was infamously known then as nicaragdao - so named after the strife torn nation of nicaragua way back when.

just to add, the tadtads and the hilagas were christian cult like vigilantes who basically settled in muslim mindanao and were avenging the atrocities of the native muslim population who were not surprisingly hating and inflicting harm on christian "colonists" who they deemed as trespassers and exploiters. kaya malalim talaga ang pinaghuhugutan pag dating dyan sa negotiations ng bbl. madaming dumanak na dugo sa southern mindanao

Googled Alsa Masa...turns out they were an anti-communist, right-wing group.

    Interestingly, back in 2014:

Duterte thumbs down Alsa Masa revival

You know, for all the talk about being a unifying president, all his actions since July 1 has been very divisive -- the only thing i completely agree on is in crushing the ASG(no need to eat them sir, they may ingest poison just to spite you). This Alsa Masa talk may just open up old wounds.
