putin's army had time to build layered defence perimeter with minefield, dragon teeth and trenches. Ukraine troops that get stuck in one of them get subjected to barrage from artillery fire and attack helicopters.
Ukrainian Troops Trained by the West Stumble in Battle
Equipped with advanced American weapons and heralded as the vanguard of a major assault, the troops became bogged down in dense Russian minefields under constant fire from artillery and helicopter gunships. Units got lost. One unit delayed a nighttime attack until dawn, losing its advantage. Another fared so badly that commanders yanked it off the battlefield altogether.
Now the Western-trained Ukrainian brigades are trying to turn things around, U.S. officials and independent analysts say. Ukrainian military commanders have changed tactics, focusing on wearing down the Russian forces with artillery and long-range missiles instead of plunging into minefields under fire. A troop surge is underway in the country’s south, with a second wave of Western-trained forces launching mostly small-scale attacks to punch through Russian lines.Last edited by Monseratto; August 3rd, 2023 at 11:32 AM.

^ the russkies really made good use of the time Ukraine had to sacrifice in order to build up their currently slow moving counter offensive.
The layers of defensive lines and schemes have been proven effective in delaying the regaining of Ukrainian lost lands.
In the meantime , the Danes and the dutch will be donating f16 fighter jets probably numbering in more than 50 units. It'll take time though before the fighting falcons will take to the sky flying the blue and yellow colors

^ according to the article, training of pilots would take 6 months w/ an additional 4 months for their flight crews. I assume training time is relatively short due to the fact that the Ukrainian pilots and their crews are already seasoned flyers having flown mig fighters for years now. So probably they’ll be operational for Ukraine right about at the 2nd anniversary of the conflict as stated by the guardian.
Btw, Greece has just announced they'll be mentoring Ukrainian pilots to fly f16s as part of their neighborly assistance to the beleaguered slavic nation.
But yes, at the rate Russia has been bombing civilian targets, there is a possibility that there will be no more able men, women, and children in Ukraine past this year as some quarters have been gleefully pointing out.
