One of my best friends is also from Baguio, covered naman ng scholarship niya yung stay niya in Kalayaan Dorm in UPD

They usually give dorm slots to those from the provinces talaga para hindi hindrance ang lodging to study in UPD.

3k per month is just for college education.

When I ran the numbers, it’s about 40k per month per child for education, food, clothing, and other miscellaneous expenses.

So to raise a child for 20 years total cost is around 10M per child.

[emoji28]

If I had known back then, I'd probably pushed to study there haha. Wala pa akong alam sa buhay nun

Another reason I wasn't able to go was that my mother thought I'd be activist or join a frat while I'm there. lol stereotypes

Yup, that's true. I have a daughter in college at ganyan range and it's draining our bank accounts lol. A masakit lang sa loob eh the tuition is increasing each year at mas mahal pa ngayon na online learning kaysa yung face to face before the pandemic. Parang you are getting less but paying more.

I’d spend the extra for ADMU/DLSU than spend a lot for UST but not have the same job prospects.

From my experience, UP/ADMU/DLSU grads get far better job offers than typical UST grads.

    Depends on the course

But generally if they both have the course, Ateneo would be better (arguably except Med)

Agree on this one qnd with viper888. Depende sa course din talaga, plus yung factor na meron din talaga magagaling or matatalino na kahit saan pa graduate lilitaw talaga abilidad later on and you can't deny their upward trajectory in the ladder of success!

True. The top graduates will always shine.

However if you’re a top-tier student and you study in a so-so school, your development is hampered din and you’ll typically start off on the back foot compared to top grads from good schools. Parang Kai Sotto kung sa PBA lang naglaro di mamamaximize potential vs US NCAA/NBA.

From my batch of new hires in our company 4 years ago, there were 3 who weren’t from UP/ADMU/DLSU. One was a student council president, tapos yung dalawa were part of that year’s Ten Outstanding Students of the Phillippines.

Coincidentally, yung 3 na yun have been underperformers, sila nalang hindi napopromote, yung isa actually has been counseled out already for poor performance.

graduating from the "favored" school puts one a step ahead of the pack.
but what happens after that, is entirely up to the person.
many times, what matters is more of the person's personality and not of the school's.
the better combination would be a person with an achievement-oriented personality + good schooling background.
coming from a favored school but brandishing a lackadaisical personality...
versus performance-personality despite coming from a so-so school...

    so how does one decide?
look at the person's past performance.
how he was, the past 20 years,
is probably how he'd be, the next 40 years.

No need to explain, we're both singing from the same song sheet. I spent 8 years of my life at loyola heights so understandably my preference will always lean towards the nest .

I just wanted to inject some levity in what has become a pretty sedate thread.

Nabanggit ko lang naman ust kasi curious ako sa cost ng pag-papa-aral doon. I Didn't mean anything more than that.

But the bugbog o dignidad reference, well , alums from the ags or ahs know what i talk about.

“Bugbog o Dignidad” isn’t limited to AGS/AHS alums. That blew up all over social media. [emoji846]

BTT: UST is 50-60k/sem. So roughly half a million for college there.

The past few weeks have been entrance exam results season. UST, DLSU, and ADMU are out. Last one left is UPCAT perhaps by mid-June. Since I’ll be sending my sister-in-law to college, I’m invested in these results, hoping for the best for UP.

There was a thread years ago at PEX about preferred colleges to go to. One poster said she passed the UPCAT but her parents did not want her to go because of the same stereotyped reasons (commies, activists, godless heathens, frats/soros) and forced her to go to an old school along Espana instead. The funniest comment was: your parents are cruel!

Anyway, yeah everyone needs that initial big break that a diploma from a well-known school can provide.

Really depends sa course so you cant generalize when it comes to schools. But definitely good schools have a great advantage.
Came from The Hill as well down to España for college.
Strong suits ng UST are Medicine and Archi.
Ateneo naman is business and management and others.
CSB is the best daw when it comes to graphic design and arts.
    DLSU sa business din.
    UP is medicine and others.

If you look at the Big Four Trashtalkan group

The UP activists are not the problem, the UP politicians are....

I personally believe an entrance exam would still be best coupled with the usual essays, verus school rankings, essay type entrance exam as criteria. Dami kasi na relaks lang sa basic education years pero iba talaga academic level, lalabas at lalabas talaga talino. Yan problem sa system with UP admission this year imho, heavily based sa school rankings but the reality is with DepEd' ranking style and with many grandstanding parents, ilan lang talaga deserving kung papa-examinin mo mga yan. Yes, there will always be "outliers and lucky" takers, but an entrance exam will easily weed out the weak in academics when push comes to shove.

Though I am sure they took into considerations many factors as well and may have even used some form of weghted scale to rank once performance based on one's school, size of class etc. Some AI algorithm app maybe.

Does school really matter?
