Started visiting dealerships March last year, with a budget of 800k.
We were looking for a car that was fuel efficient, comfortable, and for practical reasons, had a spacious trunk.
our initial considerations were:
1) Ford Focus Trend 1.8 M/T Sedan
2) Honda City 1.3 E A/T
3) Toyota Vios 1.5 G M/T
4) Hyundai Accent M/T
5) Toyota Altis 1.6 E M/T
and two new players at the time:
6) Chevrolet Cruze L M/T
7) Mazda2 1.5 A/T sedan
it eventually boiled down between the new, small, light mazda2 and the proven, big, heavy focus.
In the end, the mazda2 won over because of the following:
-for the price we were getting a 1.5 mill with an A/T - so the performance was better than the 1.3 subcompacts, and it was more convenient than the M/T's listed
-compared to the vios, focus, altis, and accent, it was newer, and the features it had were more than enough to make us happy.
-the stock 4-piece sound system was great and the aux-in was in a convenient, accessible place (the one in the focus was weird).
-the aircon was good enough to defeat the burning summer heat
-the cruze and the city had a couple more toys (trip computer and USB support), but we could live without those things
-the light curb weight (~1,000 kg) assured better fuel economy especially compared to the 1,200-1,400 kilo compacts (focus, cruze and altis)
-the trunk is big, similar to the city's.
-I hate to admit it at the time, but it was really, really fun to drive (never driven such a car with light and direct steering!). The only other car in that list that made me smile while driving was the focus
-it's a looker amidst a sea of toyota vioses and honda cities, and it came in a color that was just utterly ridiculous
now, with the introduction of the technology-packed fiesta and the cheaper accent, do we have any remorse?
NO. :D
