And with M3's SkyActiv direct injection engine, some cons to think about:

Though direct injection is currently seen mostly on luxury vehicles or on mainstream cars as a higher-trim option (priced anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand), it could soon be within the means of more drivers as costs continue to come down.

But those engines are also having reliability problems, something that automakers are trying to keep quiet.

    ...

Although the breakthrough seems like a dream come true, an unwanted side effect has been emerging. Letter writers have complained to Consumer Reports and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that over time DI can lead to clogged fuel systems and engine carbon buildup. The result can be engine hesitation and a loss of power—and the need for expensive repairs.

Some carmakers, including BMW and Kia, have issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) to their dealers recommending that drivers use only name-brand detergent gasoline—without ethanol additives—and that they periodically add a fuel-system cleaner when they refuel. (A TSB is an alert that the automaker sends to dealers to warn about ongoing problems with individual models and how to fix them. It may allow dealers to make repairs at little or no cost to the customer as a goodwill gesture.)

Pros and Cons of Direct Injection Engines - Consumer Reports

Shell V-Power does not contain ethanol afaik. FuelSave, yes.

NOTE: Engine valves shown are from direct injection engines. Carbon buildup will be more severe without fuel sprayed over the intake valves.
Yep I did. The cutouts and intake valve actual samples are marked as DI engines with the disclaimer that port injected engines might look different. Their tests however were done on port injected engines. Early DI engines had problems with gunk buildup on intake ports but Mazda has some tricks that should minimize this.

The 86/BRZ twins have it good: DI and port-injected.

IMO it won't do much to the intake valves. The pump, injectors and the rest of the fueling system however are another story.

Even the Shell representative mentioned that their claims are on a port injected engine.

Direct injected engines have no way of gasoline getting sprayed on the backside of their intake valves.

Good news for port injected engines but those with DI engines still have the problem of carbon build up at the back of the intake valves.

That 10% bioethanol in FuelSave that concerns me, the potential corrosive damage on the fuel line and other parts of the engine. Bimmers are probably aware of this, they're probably staying away from fuels with ethanol.

So Mazda SkyActiv can run fine on 91 octane, but ethanol in the fuel? It's too early to see M3 SkyActiv engines manifesting issues with it, we will probably know after 5 years. Perhaps at that point the internal combustion engine is busted and we will just drive electric cars [emoji16]

That D4S dual injection, derived from the D4 direct injection that debuted in the mid 90s, is Toyota's contribution to those twins. I'd welcome seeing more of the dual.[emoji106]

    Hi guys.

ive been doing research on wheels and tire specs and how they fit cos im planning to change my m3's. its my 1st car and i have very very little knowledge on wheels, how they fit, etc etc.

so far, im thinking of getting rota kbf 18x8.5 +44 at sa tires naman i have no idea kung what brand but sa specs, i think im going for 245/40 r18. so my questions are, if i change my wheels and tires to those specs, do i need to have my fenders rolled? rubbing? pros and cons? and any suggestions sa specs or sa brand ng wheels/tires na kukunin ko? thank you!

245/40/18 on 8.5" wide et44 will rub at both upper quadrants nearest the rear doors. Your options are:
-fender roll that portion. Be sure to use a heat gun to soften the paint around the area to be rolled.
    Or
-Rear camber arms for a bit more negative camber. JBR, SPC, Megan Racing/HardRace have BM/BN3 specific ones.
    Or
225/45/18. 225 is the minimum allowed limit for 8.5s. It'll give you a slight stretch like those stock on BMW 1seriesMs & M2s, but you'll be free of the physical torture of rolling & the budget punishment of those no-hobo camber arms
    Or
Find wheels of higher offset. The most ideal for our Ms are 8.5" down & et45 up.

If you're after KBFs, Call OVTph +639174726847. Last I checked, there seemed to be a good used set available w/ 225/45s...no roll nor arms needed.[emoji4]
    Happy shoe-shoppin'!!!!

Nope...but w/ some work, the flying M can be transplanted to the Rota caps....Something PeligRacing can surely do.[emoji4]
