Are you sure it the headlights are still on? I have the same model and variant, and I noticed that when you turn off the engine, the lights automatically shuts off as well. You may try testing it.

Yes, pretty sure the headlights were still on. When I opened the car there was the long beeping noise that wouldn't stop until I turned the headlights off. This was during the night time so it was set to the low beam headlights turned on.

Newer cars nowadays automatically turn-off the headlights (sometimes even the parklights/clearance lights) once the ignition key is switched-off. Also the headlights will not switch on unless the key is at least switched to the ACC. That means no current is flowing to the headlights the moment you remove the key.

Well the Mazda 3 is keyless so I'm not quite sure anymore. I just know when I came back to the car about 2 hours later the headlights were still on and the continuous beep noise was there until I turned the headlights off. :/

The headlights will automatically turn off after switching the engine off only if the headlight mode is set to auto. The beeping sound is a reminder that the headlight is still on and will not switch off automatically.

My 2015 Mazda 2 is also keyless and the HLs and DRLs (even when the light stalk is set to auto) turn off when I shut the engine down. Don't worry about it.

Correction: The beeping sound actually happens when the car acc is turned on. Pressing the start button without stepping on the brake will turn on the acc.

As for the headlights, it actually goes off after switching off the engine even if the headlight lever is activated. The park lights however will remain on unless the the headlight auto mode is used.

Most modern cars still allow headlights to be turned on even if there is no key ...

Please take time to read your vehicle's operating manual ...

Our 2014 1.5 BM3 is programmed differently from our M2 DJ. The former's headlamps won't turn off upon shutting engine down, the latter's would. The dealership should be able to able/disable the different options in the BCM. The M2 DJ DRL can be turned on/off thru its MzdConnect, our BM3 can't.

Most modern cars turn off the HL when the key is in the OFF position and will not turn on w/o it at least in the ACC. In my lowly Korean 2014 Sorento, it won't even turn on unless its in the ON. Its a safety feature to keep the battery going flat.

Tested it now, the lights turn off when I turn the engine off, but only if the headlight is in the "ON" position. If it is on Park Light only, it does not turn off automatically.

My 2014 1.5 BM3 isn't like most here. The headlamps, hi/lo, & park work w/ engine OFF & key on OFF. This is among the tweakable options via the BCM.
The M2 DJ will have lamps go off upon engine shutdown.

I reckon these are pictures of a Mazda 3 SkyActive engine without the cover:

2nd time we found engine wires/harness... - Technical Details | Facebook

I should check my M3's engine as well. My unit was stored at the casa for 2 weeks before it was released.

My weekend warrior was a pest victim, too. Plug wires are their fave. Got me an ultrasonic pest repellant plugged in an outlet closest the car's front end...dunno if that really works, tho. So far, no new scars. [emoji20][emoji120]

A rat used to live in my 3's engine bay. Once it brought in loot from the garbage and stashed them around the wheel wells. Good thing it stayed on the engine undertray and I found no tracks around the top where most of the wires are. I hosed out the undertray and removed the trash. So far it hasn't come back.

You can be sure that it, or they, will come back. We've had so many instances of rats chewing through car wires and rubber parts over the years that the only solution was to have all nearby storm and sewer drains properly covered or have at least one resident cat around.
