I have no concerns or issues with my FXT and its CVT. Do you have a problem with your Subie? Why be concerned about the Ascent and Outback? Are you going to buy one?

I guess all the rest (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi) are not as good as Mazda for selling out to CVT.

To say you don't have an issue with your car doesn’t speak about the totality of a brand's quality.

I've been tracking the quality of various car brands for an upcoming purchase. Subaru has been in my wishlist years ago. With various recalls and quality issues reported, Subaru is not anymore in my wishlist for a future purchase.

Various car brands went for the CVT route because that's the easiest/cheapest option for increasing fuel economy. Mazda decided not to go for that route. They focused instead on creating an engine/transmission system that can give good fuel economy without sacrificing the good drive feel of a tradional gearbox and naturally aspirated engine.

Let's not turn this into a CVT vs nonCVT thread, guys.[emoji4]
Nobody is claiming one above another. The point was about Mazda staying stubborn on continuing the Combustion push & CVT refusal. Giving the CVTphobic crowd & those who keep their vehicles long term an option. That can't be a bad thing, right?[emoji4][emoji111]

I suggest that you own one first before burying the axe of unreliability. Just because it was reported that a recall happened for a certain model, that doesn’t speak for the whole brand.

I have no brand affinity whatsoever but I don’t go around telling everyone a certain brand is unreliable unless me or a friend had a first hand experience on fatal issues with a car.

Same here. Those were the better years of Subaru.

Newer Subarus, sorry I'll pass Egan. I won't spend my hard earned cash to be a guinea pig.

I never said Subaru is unreliable nor I don't go around telling folks about it. Quality recently is questionable because of these frequent recalls from the brand, so for me personally I won't buy the new models from Subaru.

First hand experience on issues can be common or a fluke. It's not really a good way to gauge the quality of the car. The fuel pump issue with the Honda BRV is one example of an unlucky fluke. The DCT issue with the Ford Fiesta/Ecosport is common. Now tell me which brand will give a bad impression in terms of quality.

Going back to Subaru, if this brand keeps on making these recalls with their models, that gives me an impression that there's something wrong with the quality control from the design and manufacturing process. Subaru did admit they're making some effort to address some missteps in their quality control. That's something that remains to be seen.

They've been having some issues lately & have been working em out. They'll be fine.
Competition... Regulations....they're driving car companies mad. Survival now isn't the same game as the ol' days when names were built on reliability. It's the opposite...Planned Obsolescence....& we're all getting sucked into their hypnotic conditioning about the new normal.

I'm always on the side of skepticism whenever a new car model comes out, whether it's an engine, infotainment system, etc. We keep on getting all these feeds of gimmicks from car manufacturers how they achieve better fuel economy. That's all good because of sustainability of the environment but then it comes at the cost of consumers unknowingly becoming the test dummies for new technologies.

The one thing I really like with the new Mazda3 BP model is that they stuck with the proven Skyactiv technology. This brand is still pushing forward on what can be further improved with the combustion engine without cutting corners on the transmission, using turbo on a small displacement engine, etc. That's what not selling out is all about. It's innovation and going against the flow of selling out for profitability.

Couldn’t agree more. Those new “modern” features blind the hell out of buyers. The more features, be it useless or not, means the vehicle is better for most people nowadays.

But Mazda’s not that innocent though... may mga features din sila for planned obsolescence.

The problem with Subaru is that they’re kind of boring now. The only decent option is the Levorg and WRX. Shame they discontinued the Forester XT.

Boring is a broad term. For some folks, non-turbo sedans and suvs are boring. For folks like me, CVT is making the petrol powered vehicles boring. The feel of the shifting gears and change with the RPM are gone. It makes the driving experience bland for my taste.

For the CVTs, the only way i could think of to make the situation 'less boring' is just via min-maxing performance with FC every time. I do miss the shifting of a normal AT.

I am really curious about the newer 8 and 9 speed ATs. I would understand they are way better than and 4 or 5speed ATs, but reliability wise, i have no clue.

GM has had issues with their 8speed before so not sure about these newer ones from aisin.

Curious though why mazda is still with 6 speed at. I know their transmissions are part of the whole skyactive system when they developed them, are they in house or from aisin?

Adding gears is more about hitting better efficiency. Personally, I don't crave for anything beyond...we have no roads.[emoji13]
Mazda builds the SkyActiv Drive transmissions inhouse. They put a plant up in Thailand a few years back to raise annual tranny production w/ their Hofu one.

6 speed transmission is a stable technology compared with those with more gears. Mazda went for the proven gear ratio and just improved on it.

Yes it's true that more gears would result to better fuel economy, efficient power delivery, etc, but there are concerns as well. More gears, more complex the transmission design will end up.

One of the vital reasons for all the added tech is to increase dealership service dependency.

Another reason is the ever increasing pressure from government regulatory agencies to cut down on emissions. Car manufacturers have to think up innovative ways on how to comply. DPF anyone?

There was this report from Australia about DPF malfunctioning with the Toyota diesel engine.

Toyota Australia: Class action over filters could affect 25, cars

Dieselgate is another example. You'd think its only Volkswagen using such defeat device to cheat on emission tests. BMW, Mercedes are also doing these. The German gov is just turning a blind eye on these scandals.

    Volkswagen's nightmare ain't over yet.

That would be true. I just haven't really tried even all 6 gears of a 6AT. Hehe.

When i test drove the mazda 3, i only reached up to 4th if im not mistaken. Hehe.

It is just a curiosity for me. But 6 seems to be a good spot given we have 6MT for some parity at least in terms of complexity (or less complexity compared to the 8 and 9 speeds).

Curious how far the multiple cross partnerships between the japanese companies would intertwine the tech for newer models.

    Subaru and toyota - brz/86
Mazda and toyota - i think only the us yaris is the current product of this which is a rebadged mazda 2. But it should also be mazda being able to use toyota hybrid tech
Toyota and suzuki - new mpv? XL6 i think that is in development

Based on my experience with our Focus Ecoboost and Kona, a 6 speed feels like 5 speed in terms of shifting gears but the engine is more relaxed at higher speeds. For example, with our Honda City with the 5 speed, when traveling at 80 to 100 km/h you can hear the engine revving and it feels going like we’re going fast.

When in the Focus or Kona, 120km/h feels like 80km/h. Sometimes I don’t even notice 130km/h na pala ako.
