Just today, we brought the Ranger for service and I thought I’d look at the Mazda showroom beside it. I saw a new red Mazda3 (Speed I think). There were no people around so I got to play with it a little bit... I got mixed feelings with it...

Exterior is beautiful. No doubt. The C pillar is not an issue in real life.

Opening the doors (front and rear), it felt a bit off. The door handle felt a bit cheap and thin, and the doors themselves lacked that solid feel. It felt a bit light and hollow.

I then inspected the interior. It LOOKED really premium and expensive. The leather looked smooth and it is in all the right places. I also like the black headliner. But upon touching the soft plastics, and rotary knobs, I was disappointed... the knob for the auto climate was loose while the other knobs for the volume and infotainment were normal but lacked that damped heavy feel. The buttons on the steering wheel felt strange especially the up and down volume, a bit spongy and goes around everywhere. The soft touch plastics are nowhere near as soft as the older and cheaper Focus I’m driving now.

These are nitpicks but with a substantial price increase, I was hoping for a more premium feel, not only looks. Kulang pa, but it is almost there.

    Honda must be smiling.
Their main competitor in this segment priced themselves out of competition.

I'll drop by at the 9th avenue to check out if the new Mazda3 is really a premium sedan.

I might drop by also. I would not put my expectations so high with the 3 on being premium. The 6 has more to offer.

They shouldn't market the 3 as premium. Maybe a semi sporty compact car pa. Problema pati yung presyo premium na din. Sayang, ganda na ng position ng mazda3 dati in terms of pricing and features....

I think mazda 2 was the volume seller.
    Mas marami sa daan.

Hoping they dont classify the upcoming bt50 as a premium truck kuno.

    ------------

Baka by a year from now, they will offer a stripped out variant of the 3 just to sell. Hey, they are in business cause they need to sell stuff.

I'm not sure if they can market it as a sporty compact because it lacks numbers in terms of performance...

You have to experience it "daw" before digging into the numbers. The 1.5L model is not as quick as the Civic 1.8L but it subjectively feels faster, as per Ulysses Ang of CarguidePH. The 2.0L of Mazda3 is the model to buy.

I'll be there with a Subaru and Euro fanboi friend on Friday.

Might be bringing the wife on Sunday. She didn't like the 2014 3's looks at first until she saw a girl driving one. The test drive sealed the deal. She still prefers daily driving "my" car instead of her newer, more powerful, smoother, better-sightlined Subie.

IMO numbers on paper and the asking price don't make sense. Mazdas have always appealed to the heart. Even after 5 years of ownership it still passes the look-back test. The interior is a lot better than the new Subarus. I expect the BP to be several steps above the BM/BN. Hope I won't be disappointed. I also hope I will be disappointed because if we like it then sasakit na naman ulo ko on what to do with our current car.

I can go there on Friday maybe around 5pm to 6pm. Paano ko maharurot yun sa sobrang traffic sa BGC kapag Friday late afternoon to evening? Baka puwede doon sa stretch ng road near IS.

Duda ko around High Street lang ang route neto. Pwede harurot stoplight to stoplight. Honda to Bentley medyo maluwag kahit anong oras.

Puwede from Fort Strip to Bentley but may stop light in between. Yung 38th street from IS to Toyota BGC, medyo maluwag yun tapos wala stoplight in between. Yun ang stretch of road na ginamit ng Subaru dati for test drive.

    Women, right? 😂

In my opinion, the new Mazda3 is only a slight upgrade (and downgrade) over the previous model. It’s pricier. It’s slower than the old one based on tests. The interior looks really good but feels nothing special. I’d wait for the facelift or the next generation.

Can’t comment about the handling and NVH since I’ve yet to drive one.

The 1.5 really sounds better and the traditional AT has more "kick", but stock to stock, the 1.8 Civic is faster both on a straight line and around the track. From firsthand experience, the 1.8 can even beat the old 2.0 around the track.

If track times and driving feel are important, the Jazz 1.5 MT is both faster and more engaging than the Mazda 3 1.5, not to mention much much cheaper.

Might be because the 3 2.0L’s driver is not as good. Haha

But yes, the Jazz 1.5 can probably shame even 2.0L compacts before it loses steam with its top speed

They should put a 2.0L engine in the 2, like in the MX5.
