I think I have to agree with you... fc ng hatch in city is around 6-7L/km only. Last sunday, pumunta ako ng Angeles, at 100kph driving I was only able to lower down the consumption upto 15km/l based on the computer reading.. di ko na nasubukan mag 80kph kasi medyo gahol kami sa oras.. but 80kph is the optimal/most efficient.

Your city figure is what I suspect the real average fc for our Rio5, way lower than Kia's claim of 8-9km/L. I have no qualm on Rio5 true fc if Kia SA just informed me of the actual fc numbers. Unrealistic fc by SA would just make me fuming mad coz it makes me think I'm a jackass.

I'll try running the car according to the scenario you mentioned if I got the chance to drive sa higway. I'll post my observation soon after.

Either my fc problem is isolated or this is the actual fc for Rio5 early on it's mileage and may improved after a few thousands run. Even at 20% gain after break-in, a 7-7.5km/L may not be low for this car of this segment but I can live with it. The car is heavier by 30kgs, has wider & larger tires and rims compared to the sedan of same drive-train, which according to some feedback here the average fc is around 7-8km/L city at moderate traffic.

20-50km/h average city speed based on regular tachometer display on the move not based on trip computer at 16 avg speed.

Just been to car wash this morning and the guy next to me grumbled on his Civic 1.8S' high fc of 8km/L around the city. His normal route usually include moderate to heavy traffic from home, office and school trips. His eyes got wide and jaw dropped in disbelief upon hearing my fc. His highway fc yield is at 15km/L. Now his smiling... at my expense if I say so myself.

At present my city fc is closed to or about the same to Camry, Accord, Cr-v 2.4 4x4 and Fortuner gas. Seemed to me this sub-compact Rio5 is a gas guzzler for it's size.

mukhang malakas nga FC ng rio. pansin ko sa fuel gauge ang 1/4 natatakbo ko around 70kms, mixed highway and city with heavy traffic in makati and edsa

but i'll wait for my next full tank to get the actual FC

so kung ganyan na talaga, then that makes it the worst of three worlds na, (1) less powerful engine (malamang hirap ito sa overtakean), (2) gas guzzler, and then (1) low ground clearance car (talo sa baha and potholes). parang sa lahat talo ka na. the only reason why i'm considering to buy again a sedan is bec. I thought newer sedans nowadays are thrifty and nimble, dahil na din sa improvements sa technology. it's been more than 10 years since I drove my last Civic, kaya hindi na ako sanay sa sedan.

oh well, siguro enjoy na lang nyo yun good looks nya and you got a car with start stop engine tech na less than 900K. if you buy the right colors nga lalo na yun red, you can convoy na nga with a Veloster with this beautiful exterior car.

pati nga yun sa Accent na M/T, sabi nila masama daw ang FC din. kasi malaki din ang body talaga ng Accent eh for a 1.4. eh dati yan 1.4 pang Picanto / Getz lang yan

wala pala talaga advantage ang mga new sedans nowadays, ang gastos pa sa pang-ilalim nyan mga yan lagi palit every 2-3 years. Vios lang siguro ang talagang matipid kasi yun taxi drivers na nakakauusap ko, they vouch for its thriftiness

you mean eco off mode hehe, wala atang kinalaman ego ni cyberian sa FC ng rio niya but i also second the motion, try turning off the eco mode and hataw hataw ka konti

but i really like the rio hatch, if not for the FC lang.

*cyberian, what is your tire pressure?

ECO mode: I'll try to disengage it soon after this 3rd full tank to see if a higher octane fuel yields better result. Both XCS full tank yielded below 6km/L.

Tire pressure: 32 F/R based on factory recommendation (driver side door sill sticker) from 35 (noticed too hard on pot holes causing front suspension rattles). It was 52 Rear/57 Front when it came out from the Kia showroom!

EGO: You're right, poor fc is nothing to brag about. It's disappointing and frustrating having told by Kia Sales Agents that Rio fc is 8-9 city, which is to me medyo malakas na nga compared to competitors' claim of the same category na it's fuel efficient daw yong kanila- ex.: Ford 1.4L = 10-11 city, 14-16 highway.

By the way, Mazda showcased it's new Mazda3 at the local Kitkai Mall and the sales agents there assured me it's 1.6L 5DR city fc is 9km/L on the low side and as high as 11km/L daw based on buyers' feed backs. The Mazda2 hatch and sedan's city fc is even better, 10km/L city on the low side and 12km/L on the high side. Highway, both above 16km/L. To prove their point, they invited me for a test drive sa kanilang showroom anytime of my convenience for Fuel Consumption testing and evaluation! Now, that's total confidence don't you think?

Also, I just checked on the Orlando forums and the city FC average there is 8km/L on the low side and as high as 11km/L. It's bigger, heavier and has larger engine (1.8L). Before the Kia Rio purchase I actually already had a Bank P.O. for the Orlando and brought a friend who's looking to buy a new family carrier. He end up debating with the Chevy Sales Rep about the FC. My friend just find it hard to accept that the Orlando's claimed city FC is just a notch lower to his 2010 (all-new) Honda City 1.5E's 10km/L. The Sales Rep pointed to high tech engine design and management- dual CVT, dual VVT, dual etc. if I recall it correctly, puro dual daw kaya fuel efficient. Judging from the owners feedback, he's not lying on the fc. Now compare all that to a Kia sales rep telling you the Rio5 city fc is 8-9km/L and you'll understand my disappointment and frustration. I'm still hoping for fc improvement come 1st PMS. Kia SA told me they will look into my problem with the fc.

Good point. Some here posted fc based on avg speed to get a fair comparison over your equivalent fc. The problem is, the trip computer display your avg speed and time only for the day and every morning it resets back to zero and therefore getting all the avg readings on a full tank would be a difficult and challenging task.

One of the most accurate procedure is only practical for fc testing:

Full Tank > Reset Trip Computer > drive around the city > Full Tank again. Record all Trip Computer data after 1st fill and prior to second fill. Fuel discrepancy on first and 2nd fill (based on the pump reading) = Fuel consumed. This way you'll get the fc of the distance traveled both on manual computation and trip computer, with avg speed and elapsed time. I'll try doing this soon both on day (moderate-heavy traffic) and night (light or no traffic) fc evaluation drive.

    Approx.: Light traffic>14km/h
    Moderate>10km/h
    Heavy>6km/h
    Highway (short run)>30km/h

Estimate pa 'to kasi I don't monitor much on the avg speed. Display always on the INSTant Fuel Economy while driving and make quick cycle to view Trip Odo. I'll keep this in mind from now on.

nag pa full tank ulit ako kanina after maging half fuel gauge ko.

    logged in 135kms tas filled up 19.86 liters. that's around 6.7 kms/liter

pero may HWAY driving din. so i guess mga 80 city and 20 hway

ECO mode off. at hindi eco driving, shift around 2K up to 3K

after full tank distance to empty was 569kms. and using caltex GOLD

I wonder how does the 1.2L Rio perform in traffic/pure city driving in terms of fuel economy..

May I ask ano model Rio mo sir c_cube?

Your full tank of about 40L and distance to empty of 569kms, are both bigger than my Rio5. It seemed to me the sedan has bigger fuel tank.

Just a thought. If we both have the same 1.4L engine, conventional wisdom would tell me that your manual trans will give you a better fc over mine by at least 1km/L minimum. If this would be the case, I can assume my Rio5 fc would be around 5.7kms/L on the same driving condition you mentioned. Malakas pa rin if I compare this with the following:

sir eido (page 78 of this forum), to quote: "kotse ko 10km/h avg speed, fc ko 7.5km/l. ayala ave makati rush hour yan. 2.2 kotse ko" end quote.

Sir pop3corn (page 78 din), to quote: "grabeh hanggang 7.4km/liter *SG. 99 CRV ko consistent sa 8km/liter (pure city rush hour9 13 years old na yun 4wD pa." end quote.

Both have much bigger engine displacement and yet consumes less than my Rio5. Ngek!

Besides, I just compare this Rio5 with the other vehicles I have driven such as Jazz 1.5L & 2010 City 1.5L, Sentra 1.6L, Corolla 1.6L and Optra 1.6L, all bigger engine din than the Rio5 and yet has better fc.

My Vios 1.3E consumes 12km/L pure city driving, drops around 10km/L on rush hour. About 16km/L highway.

Our FD consumes 8-9km/L city driving, and that's a 1.8L. For the Lancer EX which has 2.0L engine, consumes around 7-8km/L.

4km/L for a Rio, or even 5km/L is abnormal. Camry territory na yan. 7km/L might be acceptable under certain conditions but 4km/L is just absurd.

    Just saying. 😒

    Precisely.

This is the first gasoline car I ever owned with a crappy fc for it's size. My local 1999 Starex 2.5 Turbo-intercooler A/T fc was 5.5km/L city and used to be the fuel miser of all the vehicles but at least it consumes less on idle and has cheaper fuel. The manual 1995 local Pajero Turbo-intercooler fc is 7.5km/L city and also consumes less on idle. My Rio5 fc is high on the road and also on idle.

I thought the Optra 1.6 LS my wife and I bought new back in 2004 is the worst fc ever having avg around 7-7.5km/L city. This Rio5 broke the record, and it's a smaller car. Ha!

I'm on 541kms pa and eager to have the unit serviced for the 1st PMS (1000 km.) as the Kia SA assured me they will look into my fc problem. I do hope it will improve to or near their claimed fc of 8-9km/L city. But if it won't improve, they might as well tell me straight to my face that the fc I'm having is the normal and correct fc sa Rio5 and ok na ako doon, I can live with it naman kahit pagtawanan by family, friends and even strangers asking the fc. That way, I won't be chasing ghost anymore.
