The damage is on both passenger side of the vehicles both the truck was stopped straight in the opposing lane pointing in the correct direction(*0:25). The driver falling asleep at the wheel came from a testimony of a surviving passenger. The driver would be the only who could refute that if he ends up recovering from his injuries(the 5 DOA were all his passengers)
It is insensitive to say this but from the photos of the cabin it looks like (the driver seat(*0:35) looks similar to an IIHS test with an unbelted rear passenger) some of the occupants were unbelted and feels that could have made a difference to the outcomes of the second/third row occupants.

Otherwise this seems like a seat/restraint issue that TMP should be looking into for a potential defect
Sampolan na yan. Make him pay for everthing and jail him for the maximum term allowable under the law.

my only explanation here,
is that the crumpled vehicle's driver veered off so much, he ended up on the rightmost lane of the oncoming truck, hitting the truck on its right side.
it also shows just how much heavy metal a truck is made with, compared to any suv.
while suvs are designed to collapse to weaken the impact, heavy trucks are designed to resist all manner of external deformation.

Accident happened in Batangas and news report says they were coming all the way from Northern Samar.
That's a very long drive (IIRC 19-20 hours to Manila) and one I wouldn't do without an overnight stop along the way or a co-driver I can swap with.
EU bawal na to drive more than 9 hours in a day, 11 hours for the US.
And yeah, buckle up even when seated at the back. I'd say 99% of people here use seatbelts only when seated at the front.
Talk about drive through the counter or finding ways

It looks like intentionally backed up and acclerated forward. And witnesses said they smelled alcohol from the driver.
