the way i see it, it appears to be a multi-faceted issue.
the bike lane has effectively eaten away one lane for four-wheel vehicles. traffic has to make do with one less lane, for everything, including parking, loading and unloading, or simply driving by. yes, there may be rules etc, but the fact is, it happens.
it is common sense, one does not open one's door, without first taking pains to look to see.
swerving without looking back is a no-no, regardless of how many wheels one has. having side mirrors helps, 'though.
and driving defensively is a must.
