The prefacelifted Ranger (2012-mid 2015) uses hydraulic power steering while the facelifted Ranger (2015-present) uses EPS.

EPS is feather light on low speeds then gets heavier on higher speeds. Also saves fuel by 1-2%. Mas madali i-drive pag EPS kasi hindi mabigat yung steering, especially during stop and go traffic and when parking.

hydraulic PS uses liquids driven by engine power. it somewhat "robs" the engine of power..
eps uses an electric motor. it does not "rob" the engine of power, hence the supposed better fuel efficiency.. daw.

my wigo uses eps, and its steering is on the heavy side.
my old sentra was hydraulic, and it had heavy-finger-touch steering..

it all depends on the design siguro..

Thanks!!! Dammn sabi ko na nga ba. Bullshit sales talk si Lapuk. Tsk. I was in Ford Alabang and was listening sa sales pitch about 800mm wading na kaya daw nilagay sa top ang alternator kae elect eqpmnt. Eh tinanong ko baket yung EPS motor and electrical harness ang baba ng location.,,, well sabi designed daw na mabasa w/c I agree kaso hirit nya proven daw na walang failure since 3-4yrs na labas ang Ranger and wala daw issue😳 Same lang daw EPS yun... I took it w/ a grain of salt am not sure kase hence I confirmed w/ Ranger owners

Thanks dr. D. I agree on this. Meron nga eps na on the heavy side at meron hydraulic na easy and light to use however some eps are getting heavy when it moves fast like fiesta but ung mirage is heavy pero hindi siya steady sa straight line unlike fiesta na steady at heavy pag mabilis.

Ung altis naman super gaan pero hindi heavy ang steering pag mabilis.

Sarap siguro drive ung bago ranger.

Magaling nga EPS ng ford sa fiesta. Anlambot sa low speed. Pero sobra stable sa highway, for me sakto timpla ng tigas. Mag 3 years na fofi ko pero tuwid na tuwid parin manakbo.

It will work but you need a more capable OBD2 scanner to get proper full diagnostics. Usually these OBD2 scanners cost $300++.

Here is an update from my July purchase (WT 3.2 AT)

After 8 mos, I was cruising along NLEX going to Manila from San Fernando. I set the cruise control to 90kph then when I was near Pulilan exit, there was this car running slower than 90 in the overtaking lane. I was in the slow moving lane when I noticed a trailer far ahead. I had the intention to over take the trailer up ahead my lane so I have to speed up to over take to slow moving car currently in the overtaking lane. When I stepped on the gas to gradually hit 100 suddenly all hell broke loose. Heard a not so loud pop and then my cruise control disengaged, the Traction Control disengaged, followed by a powertrain light then check engine light came into view from the dash. When I looked at the center mirror my Ranger is spewing black smoke. So I have to quickly pull over to check the problem. As I came to a halt 500m before reaching Pulilan exit (road shoulder), the engine stalled. This was around 2 in the morning.

When I checked the engine bay, motor oil was all over the place. By then I have decided to call Ford Roadside assistance for a tow. After some discussion and a two and a half hour wait, it was loaded to a flatbed tow truck and unloaded right after the exit. Then another flat bed took it headed for Ford Cainta. A side comment by the NLEX tow truck operator was that the ranger is commonly towed in the expressway especially the 2.2 variant showing similar symptoms as mine.

Upon inspection by Ford Cainta, they discovered that the turbo unit has blown out. Repair is estimated to take two weeks. I was able to get the unit after three. They claimed the repair and parts under warranty. Thus I don't have to pay anything.

After the repair, everything seems well until I discovered few dings on the hood, driver's door and tail gate.

Additional, there is a high pitch sound emitting from the engine bay. Returned it to Ford and they say it might be the pre-tensioner. So they will check and assess whether it has to be replaced.

Two months later I checked with them if they are going to replace the pre-tensioner but at this point the noise is intermittently audible. It was only particular audible only when the truck is subjected to high loads like going up Antipolo. The service manager noted this and asked me to video it when it occurs. They are not replacing it at this time as they have instances wherein they replaced the pre-tensioner but the symptom remained.

Last week, I left the truck for them to fix the ding they have made when pushing the unit by hand around the service area. They also painted some under chassis parts that are showing rusts. A particular area of concern was the cross member directly above the rear wheels and the lower arm of the passenger side front suspension assembly. All free of charge.

When I got the unit, they didn't fix the ding on the tail gate as it is not worth to remove all the fixtures (stickers, logo with back-up camera, and roll cover lid) which I agreed. I told them that this should be a learning lesson for them to be careful when pushing cars by hand. In which my Service Advisor slyly smiled in response.

Additionally, when the turbo blew it was scheduled for its 20k PMS. The SA gave the motor oil for free as the result of the mishap. Saving around P4T.

When I asked the mechanic what are the possible causes for the turbo issue, he mentioned about the air filter being dirty but upon inspection the air cleaner passed their standards.

I was just disheartened when it happened to my unit. It was one of the last units manufactured before the face lift. So somehow you expect that all wringkles from the first examples have been ironed out already. I read about it this problem here and when we took the unit, I was confident that this has been sorted already by Ford. Big fat hope.

After the repair the engine sound seems much quieter in general. There was this particular humming sound most rangers make that is no longer present. At first I thought they forgot to reconnect the aux fan but the ranger doesn't have one.

Am I happy with the support? Generally yes, but they have to improve on some areas like regular updates to clients on the status of the fix, and setting and following deadlines they themselves set.

Am I happy with my unit. Definitely, but there is this worry at the back of my head especially when travelling long distances that it might re-occur again.

    Happy motoring folks!

I have another issue. Still with my WT3.2 and how terrible Ford's aftersales service is.

I went in for my 20k PMS. Reported excessive smoke when accelerating and a thin film of oil on my tailgate everytime I go highway driving. There seems to be an oil leak between the top block and the rest of the engine. I also reported that my coolant in the reservoir is below the low level.

The first issue: it wasn't oil, but diesel. Unfortunately one of the injectors (they didn't say which one) was loose off from the factory. So it was spewing diesel while running at high speed creating a mist thus looking like a thin film of oil on the tailgate.

The second issue: the diesel leaking went to the coolant hose connected to the radiator and the oil cooler. The hose bubbled and causing it to leak leading to the rapid decrease of coolant fluid in the reservoir.

Why Ford aftersales is terrible even after all these years? First they told me that it was normal for the coolant level to go from max level to low level in just 6mos. In which I strongly disagree. They were suppose to release the car if only i didn't insist that they make a thorough inspection of the cooling system. True enough after a second inspection they were able to trace where the leak was coming from.

I was without a car for two weeks. The service advisor kept telling me the spare parts will arrive with the next delivery of cars from the plant. That went for two weeks though deliveries happen every Tuesdays and Thursdays. I even came to the dealership on a Saturday because my SA failed to advise me that they are yet to receive the spare parts the following week.

There is no loaner car for warranty repairs. I have to endure 3 hours of jeepney ride one way just to get to work everyday. Then another 3 hour commute to go home. It is very rare for a taxi to passby our area in the wee hours of the morning. Then if you are lucky enough to get a cab, be prepared to pay P400 each way. I live in Taytay and my work is at Diliman QC. That is about 20km in between.

So you pay so much for the car. Then pay a lot for PMS only to commute for two weeks without any relief or whatsoever from Ford. They could really care less if they have inconvenienced you. Do not provide timely updates. Difficult for you to escallate your case to the management. If you were in the States or Australia, it would have been a different story. Consumers are well protected from this sort of issue.

Here is the funny part. They made me pay on top of my PMS amounting over P12k another P800 for the coolant they used to top up mine. Talk about rubbing salt to your injury. I'm thinking of switching casa. I'm currently with Ford Cainta, probably I would go to Libis for my next PMS. Is it better there?
