I believe it's the other way around. Engine knock due to pre-detonation is more likely to occur if the AFR is too lean.

My take on this is that the oil, which hasn't reached operating temp yet, is still inefficient at doing its job immediately after a cold start. The noise should eventually dissipate as the engine warms up. If not, then you have a problem.
