The Toyota engine that is prone to sludge is the 1.6L from the 2001 to 2007 Altis. I have a 2007 model (running on LPG at that) and to date at 115,000kms there's still no sludge and the last compression test at Speedyfix (at around 80,000kms) showed healthy cylinders across the board. I replace the oil every 5,000kms and i understand those who had sludge were the ones who used synthetic oil and extended the drain interval to 10,000kms.

Unless there have been minor modifications on that engine, I believe the 1.6L engine of the 10G Altis up to 2010 also use the 01-07 ZZ engine.

Yung facelifted Altis na iniba yung tail lights yung may different ZR engine na.

I stand corrected. The Gen 10 also used the same engine from the Gen 9 and 9.5. The ZR engine is good and how i wish they had something similar on the Vios/Yaris.

Long interval + tendency to forget = recipe for sludge

Nope. Just change the oil regularly (5000kms), even with just regular oil, and it will be fine.

maybe your oil has become too thin with age. Knocking may be from rocker arms starving for oil during initial start up.

any other suggestions?? so far i have changed gas from silver to gold, changed oil kahit di pa due, petron red, 20w50. ganon pa din po problem

Have you tried higher octane fuel? Does your engine have a distributor?

tanong naman po. napansin ko lang pag coldstart, mag auto rev sya ng mga 1.5rpm. pag nagmamadali ako at kailangan na umalis at nag revolution na ako, me engine knock.

pero pag hinayaan ko mag warm up to 5mins bago ako umalis, wala knocking.

cant describe pero hindi naman sya yong tok tok tok pag nag revolusyon ka from cold start. me iba lang tunog pag rev ka. pero after 5mins of warm up, wala na noise kahit i rev ko.

Seems like the engine oil hasn't warmed up yet. If you want to minimize the noise, use better type of oil or use fully synthetic oil.

Caltex Gold is 95 octane. Higher would be Shell Nitro Racing 97 octane and Petron Blaze 100 octane.

well, engine knock has been typically described as the sound of marbles falling onto a metal tin roof.
and valve chatter, like multiple metallic clicking sounds.
either way, you probably have to bring it to a mechanic for possible timing adjustment and/or valve lash adjustment.

same problem here avanza 1.3 e at 16500 kms mileage. i already brought it to toyota pero sabi nila baka maluwag lang yung belt pero hanggang ngayon andyan pa rin

pero ito na ginawa ko.
1.upgraded to caltex gold muna, mga 2 weeks na
2. change oil to shell helix yellow SN rating, 15w40

pansin ko mas tahimik makina, tapos ngayon yong warm up time ko reduced na to two minutes.. siguro next week try ko 1 min warm up time bago ko rev to check kung nawala na yong knocking.
