April 16th, 2013 12:34 PM #31Best offline smartphone GPS is OSMAND. No internet connection required for navigation. Just download the maps and it is ready. It also features the most detailed and updated maps since it uses openstreetmaps.org info.

never used my phone. i prefer dedicated gps on my GS (ce6.0 based 5" chinese) or the built in gps of the HU (growl) in the sorento. i just type in the address including house number and it takes me there. the maps are updated naman, including barangay roads in the provinces. i will be upgrading also the HU in my GS this may. mas madali kasi pag malaki ang screen, and as said earlier i save my phone's battery. mabilis pa mag-lock sa satellite kesa sa phone.

Tingin ko sir depende sa phone mo yan.
If apple yan, then sobrang bilis lang ng battery life niyan. Nag-try ako ng maps nung iOS 6, ambilis ma-lowbatt.
Mahirap i-risk lalo na kung wala kang car charger or lugar kung san pwede magcharge.
That's why I use my Samsung Galaxy Tab (android) as GPS. Before leaving the house, i-plot ko na yun destination ko so I can get directions. As I move, sumasabay yun indicator sa maps kasi naka-on GPS ko. Sa ~4 hour drive ko, hindi na lowbatt. It didn't even reach halfway. Although pinapatay ko kapag nasa expressway ako.
Drawback lang dito, if gusto mo pumunta sa point C from point B, at kailangan mo ng directions, need mo rin ng internet. Kasi hindi mag-update yun maps if wala ka internet.
Pero kung cellphone naman, tapos android, then ok lang if wala GPS coz pwede ka maginternet anytime.
It's a cheap alternative, mahal rin kasi ng GPS. It's also better kung meron ka maps... yun libro na na nabibili sa National.

kailan pa nagsalita ang MMDA app?
OnT:
if you own smartphone, don't be stupid not to buy a car charger...so low batt will never be an issue.

Just to add para sa mga Android users, kasi usually separate download ito sa Google Play
Install or update the following
1) Google Maps - sa latest version nito you can save an offline map (Tap Menu then tap "Make available offline" option) you will just scroll an area up to 80 MB size ng map tiles. I did this by saving the whole of Batangas up to Quezon City in order to avoid the need to be online sa internet to get the map tiles. Ang mawawala lang fwature sa iyo kapag offline ka is the turn by turn navigation
2) Google My Tracks - you can use this to record your route along with other statistical info like average and max speed, elevation gain, distance traveled, etc... Useful kung meron ka ihahatid sa lugar na unfamiliar ka then you can back track paano bumalik (Useful then if you are trying to figure out your Fuel Consumption sa routes na dinadaanan mo ^_^)
On your question, it still better if you have a dedicated one and use only the phone as a secondary or add-on tool. Even though i use the phone at times ang primary concern ko talaga is yung heat ng phone habang nakababad... nadala ako nang minsan na uminit ito na parang plantsa when i used it for 4 hours....

I totally agree.
I have 4 chargers for my Xperia Z, 3 are charging docks (DK-26) at static locations; home, office and car. Then I have a 16,800mAH power bank in my bag with the regular micro-USB attachment for when I'm mobile/on foot.
The Li-Ions and Li-Poly batteries have been around for about two decades now. Although, their energy density have increased since then, I think we're now approaching the limit of the technology. On the other hand, the technology on smartphones nowadays is nowhere near what they were 20 years ago and it's still moving towards the capabilities of a desktop PC. Until they develop a better battery or figure out a way to safely miniaturize a nuclear reactor {g}, we're practically stuck with this arrangement.Last edited by oj88; April 16th, 2013 at 02:27 PM.

I have this since 2007 or 2009,stocked in my cabinet,I just remember it lately lol :bwahaha:
noted sir, thank you. maybe i should try both but if it costs much to activate this using phil map, buying a much larger screen would call a day. :2thumbsup:
