Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?

Nakakarating naman sa paroroonan kahit walang gps. The smart phone apps can do the job for gps need, or get there to the general area and immediate details makukuha mo sa pagtatanong sa kalye for exact directions. Experience is based on iphone apps solely as I dont have any on Andriods or other OSs.

That too. PLUS the fact that using functions like GPS NAV on your smartphone usually quickly drains the battery in a couple of hours.

for both mapfactor and google, i use their voice nav. better lang yung google kasi kasama street names sa nav

for me,
mine should speak. hirap kasi tignan yung small screen and still drive effectively.

Most aftermarket HUs or factory units that supports Apple Carplay or Android Auto allows you to use the far larger screen of the 2DIN for navigation.

Even better, some Android HUs or plug-in Android boxes have the option to have its own data plan (SIM card) so Google Maps and/or Waze will still work even without any help from your smartphone.

But since this thread is over 10 years old, it started only about comparing dedicated GPS navigation units like Garmin's Nuvi line of products, Tom Tom, etc. to smartphones. There are pros and cons either way but for most people, smartphones are going to be the default go-to for navigation. That said, there are still niche uses of dedicated GPS (ie. off-road, trekking, boating, etc.) and it's just going to be about using the right tools for the job.

If you'll spend for your GPS activation, then I won't bother anymore especially that I have my Garmin on my iPhone. But since I have my Built in GPS in the HUs of my Monty and Mirage, I use them because of their larger screen. There are areas however that road and POI coverage is better on my iPhone's Garmin so it's also sweet to have an alternative.

There's a difference between GPS navigation on a tiny handheld device and GPS navigation via a nice, big screen on the dashboard with audible commands played through the car speakers.

Also, dedicated GPS devices have faster GPS updating and better antennas than a smartphone stuck inside the car. Especially if you have metallic window tint.

Binatone Carrera? is that your GPS you wanted to activate for Philippine use? What Philippine map will it use?

Remember your GPS is only as good as the map it uses. The most reliable maps we have for Philippine road today is the roadguide contributors map available only for Garmin and Papago GPS system.

If the map in your phone is much better than your stand alone GPS you are better off using the phone GPS. Or if the cost of activation is more than the cheapest Garmin GPS with Phil map, then just buy a Garmin GPS.

Yes sir B. Carrera GPS with UK map installed. I have this since 2007 or 2009,stocked in my cabinet,I just remember it lately lol :bwahaha:

Ako, although may Note 2 ako na merong capable GPS function, parang gusto ko pa rin ng dedicated GPS. Pero on the other side, naiisip ko yun gastos on buying a dedicated GPS kasi kaya naman ng Note 2 yun navigation. So to answer the question, if you have the money to burn, then go ahead and buy a dedicated GPS. Pero if you don't have, then don't.

Tsaka hindi naman madalas gamitin ang GPS dito eh. Last time I used it was nung nag-Baguio kami.

Based on my experience, here's how i rate them:

Dedicated GPS (garmin, tomtom, magellan) - Better

This depends if you have the latest maps in them, or if they are the highest-end model.
Sure they do have dedicated antenna for gps but that doesn't mean they are the end all be all of all direction-seeking mortals. One cool feature may not be found in another. Examples are spoken street names, cue/sound to turn left/right on the next corner, speed-sensing camera sensors, ability to relay sound to car speaker,etc. I've tried at least three GPS here in CA. All of them has the latest maps. One is OK, but consumes lots of battery. The other one forces me to turn left into a flyover. The last one doesn't even mention the street name, which could be confusing.

Nav system built-in cars - Good

I only rated this as good because i've yet to see a built-in gps in cars that has a nice interface, lots of options (waypoints, route selection, etc.) and even though has updated maps - chooses by defualt the best route. I've learned this the hard way when we went home from the nearest city to my place and it led me into an unknown route i've never drove. It still pointed us home but we're not so happy travelling into unknown locations with no gas pumps and restrooms to rest. And it's farther by 50kms total distance by the way. And I don't think its only me, coz my friend has a new CRV but has a dedicated handheld GPS too. We just couldn't trust this even if our lives depends on it.

GPS in smartphone - Best

For me this is the best solution (i've found). You don't need to shell out $150-$200 just to purchase a dedicated one that, sooner or later, you'll regret buying because of the shortcoming its giving you, or you may just can't simply justify the cost of the thing.

Specifically, i use google maps in iP5. Not does it only updates itself, but features (i need) are there when you need it. Just sync your gmail account and it can save you the addresses you chose. It has home and work address which makes it sweeter. Street names are spoken and i have yet became lost following its directions. It's not so hard on the battery, and doesn't eat alot of data either. And it connects via Bluetooth to have the sound output on your car speakers.

Caveats are it doesn't have night mode, nor it does dictate your speed like a true gps device. However, it functions like what you need - to give you directions from point A to point B - and being the best at that.

P.S. Don't use Apple's own map - it sucks!

Parang mas reliable signal ng GPS ng mga standalone navigation unit unlike sa cell pag nawala signal ng cell, di ka na makaconnect sa internet although may GPS signal pa din yung cell mo kaso di ka nya mabigyan directions or location mo. One Cell app/iOS I like and find very helpful is Waze, nagaadapt sya sa traffic condition and it really beats the stand alone unit pag may traffic sa route mo because it suggest alternative routes bastat my ibang waze users around the area (which is plenty BTW and you can message these users kung bakit traffic, some even takes the pix of the cause ng problem for you to see. It even gives you the average speed of the users on your route just in case my nagrereport ng traffic pero di naman). Problem lng is pag nagcalculate sya ng alternative route at wala cell signal/internet connection dun sa area di na sya gagana plus ang lakas umubos ng battery.

Sir niky is right, the screen of the stand alone unit is better than the cell but the cell app also has a voice prompt which I find more pleasant compared sa stand alone ;)

So IMHO both has advantages and disadvantages and can complement each other but I prefer the reliability nung stand alone
