Ratios are roughly the same too for the Altis and Mz3 2.0. 1st gear tops out at around 60 kph, 2nd gear at 120, 3rd gear at 180-190. The Mazda's 4th gear does seem longer though (or it's too heavy to breach 200 kph).

I think it just boils down to different ECU/TCM programming - one is for smoothness, the other for quick response.
