Our '05 Accord on the other hand has a very smooth tranny with almost imperceptible shifts. Gears (5 of them) are very well spread too. No unexpected upshifts here. Despite not having manual override, I hardly ever find myself wanting it.

Our A/T's hardly ever give us any trouble, besides having to replace the engine and transmission supports in the Tribute that is...

I don't think it has anything to do with the number of gears. Our old 2.0 Altis had a 4AT and that behaved very differently from my 2.0 Mazda 3. Same power, same number of gears. The Altis doesn't shift down unless you really floor it, and has virtually no shift shock. The Mazda is very responsive, but has shift shock sometimes (4th to 2nd and 1st to 2nd).
