When DMAX came out, that LT variant with same engine as the top variant was worth considering. But then came the VE navara 4x4 MT.
Price of the DMAX is at P1.288 + 120k DTI = P1.408M. The navara’s P1.490M DTI included.
At less than 90k, sobra dami ng features ng navara over the dmax.
Malaki din pala epekto ng DTI safeguard as per Sweetlucious.
Maganda nga ang start sa lower 4x4 variants, mas blank ang canvas at more budget sa mods.
Lamang na lang ng DMAX iyong mas under stressed na 3.0, kaso mas mabigat din yata at baka mas prone ma stuck sa putikan na trails.
Mas classic at malinis harap ng Navara.

Sobrang bare bones yun dmax, a little too utilitarian. Maybe its all new kaya little bit expensive.
LS variant may 110k discount. Hindi ko lang alam sa LT.

Isuzu's 3L 4JJ3 is all-new, only sharing bore and stroke from the decade-old 4JJ1. All new block, cylinder head, pistons, injector system, you name it. Response and refinement are much much improved.
It's the other way around, Mazda's getting BT50s made by Isuzu now, knowing these guys are experts at developing diesel engines.Or they can ask other manufacturers to supply them with engines.
Yeah, madaming dinagdag na features to make up for it, although it made stepping up to the 4x4 less easier to justify/afford since same na sila ng features ng 4x2 VE (sans 190hp engine, 4wd related features, and diff lock) unlike the EL 4x4 being the cheapest in the lineup to have TC and ESP and only 20k/80k more than the At/mt 4x2.
Another possible pro for the VE Navara offroad is the inclusion of both ABLS(due to having TC/ESP) and Rear diff lock.
They can always make them smaller. What I meant was newer 2.0L engines produce peak output like an old 3.0L. If they want to keep it at such a displacement, why not make it more powerful? Like maybe 250hp/500Nm.
VW has 3.0L V6 TDI engine that’s rated at 282hp/600Nm. Sadly though, this engine is prone to issues once it goes past 100k miles (160k km).

I think you sorta answered it already with the latter half of your post. Isuzu won't risk anything at the expense of its reputation as is any conservative Jap company. Also, there's no incentive to do small displacement/high output, unless they heavily tax high displacement engines in our market.
I mean, the Isuzu name is synonymous to robust diesel engines, besides the infamous 4JX1 debacle but that's long been forgotten. They'll carry along as they've always done.
High displacement, small turbo yung 2.8 ng Innova. Bodes well for reliability. Medyo sablay nga yung 2.4 Fortuner, smaller, weaker engine, pero mas mahal dahil lang sa porma.
Higher torque on paper sa Fortuner, pero sa real-world, Innova peak torque agad above idle pa lang all the way to mid rpm.
Inherent yun sa high displacement engines. Kaya negligible fuel efficiency penalty ng bigger engine, no need to rev as high to move along.
isn't the 1.9L RZ4E ang latest engine ni Isuzu? Although it has almost near specific outputs of the old 3.0L engines. RZ4E even has more grunt than the older 3.0L before the VGS turbo upgrade.
Also the 2.5L 4JK1 VGS produces less HP and torque than the RZ4E.
Less stress and more longevity for this version of 1GD-FTV. I drove one before kahit naka eco mode ako, it's still a torquey engine. Gets up to the right speed quickly.

Aside from that, andaming d-max 3.0 owners na nagsasabing pagdating sa mga todong kargahan, parang hindi man lang humina ang performance ng makina eh at di malalaman o alam ng karamihan yun unless they try personally. That's a very far cry with the vgt 4d56 engine na highly strung; may 2nd gen montero kami dati na kinargahan ng worth of more than 300kg of tiles sa likod tas nung kargado na, parang hirap bumwelo ang makina at nag gegear hunting pa. Sa isuzu, hindi ganon kahit sadyang average lang talaga ang figures niya with regards to their displacement. Yung 2.5 4jk1 nga ng unang labas na mu-x na akala ko modern crosswind engine asa 136hp lang. Mahina on-paper pero in reality, maganda daw ang hatak. Hindi bitin. Otoh, even ford's duratorq 3.2 diesel with 200ps malakas pero bitin naman yung powerband. Kaya halos wala din yung abundance ng figures niya dun. Ideal yung may balance sa figures and powerband imho.

Yung mga highly-strung engines that need high revs and/or boost can only achieve their rated output in ideal conditions. I remember seeing yung mga Vbox data the E60 M5 and it was so disappointing, because under our weather and with our fuel the engine isn't able to unleash it's full power.
