bago po ako dito. looking for expert advise. i own a fortuner. am having probs with my brakes since i bought it last year. the brake pedals vibrate and is further pressed down (instead of being steady) when i am at high speed and slam my brakes. toyota casa tells me its ABS at work and i've read it on the forums here same comments. toyota has done bleeding, put some shim on some part of the pedal, replaced brake pads. pero nandun pa rin yung problema. if its really ABS, then i would say, toyotas ABS brake design are bad. really bad. coz it makes you feel like the braking system is about to lose control. imagine that at a high speed while turning which i have been used to going up to baguio every weekend. i know of many people driving SUVs and cars with ABS but that problem is unique to toyota fortuner. kumakapit pa rin naman ang preno. but am just worried it could get worse. and if there's anything that can be done to eliminate it then at least i would try to explore some options. and does anyone know what exactly is happening at the ABS that causes such a reaction to sudden braking? tech guys at Toyota can't explain it! appreciate help from anyone out there who can give some practical tips, comments or recommendations. tnx a lot! - kkk

To know how a real ABS system at work feels, just find an empty stretch of road, drive at reasonable speed (e.g. 60kph) and slam on the brakes fully using as much force as you can. You will feel the ABS pump go to work through feedback in the pedal (rapid pulses/vibration), you might also hear a whirring sound from the engine compartment (ABS pump at work).

If the sensation you are complaining of is the same as in your controlled ABS experiment, then it must really just be the ABS system at work. The only thing you can do is get used to it by regularly practicing controlled ABS maneuvers. I've driven lots of cars with over eager ABS systems. Once you get used to it, you won't get concerned or alarmed anymore. You'll even feel reassured because with ABS at work, you are not only capable of stopping, but also capable of turning away from the obstacle should the stopping distance be inadequate.

If you want the ABS system to work less, get stickier/sportier tires. ABS only kicks in when it detects a loss of traction. It does this by comparing the rotational speeds of each wheel in relation to each other. Difference in speed means one wheel is locked up and the pump goes to work. Stickier tires are less likely to lose traction.

Turning at high speeds on an uneven road (downgrade or upgrade), unloads the inside wheels, hence activating the ABS system when you brake. On cars with lower centers of gravity or sportier suspensions, there is not much unloading going on so braking is still possible without ABS kicking in.

The Fortuner is a truck and will still drive and react like a truck.

We had a good laugh about it because it seemed silly. When I got home I thought what the heck and dipped my head under the rear of my fortuner. F*CK IT WAS MISSING TOO!

We both park in a secured office building at the corner of herrera and ayala. We still haven't established the exact date we lost the tires and we are not certain if it did occur in the building. My car has been in the garage since sunday coz my family and I flew to boracay. I only drove it to work today. My wife only recalls taking the car to Shang mall, megamall and greenhills during the past week. I know our tires are covered by the insurance but to save ourselves the hassle in the future I advice everyone to get a decent lock for the spare tires.

    Thats all folks.

BTW, the chains are in one piece and so is the bracket. I don't know how they did it but they did. HASSLE!
Di na masyadong bago yan. They first deflate the sparetire then pag-maluwang na pwede mo na matanggal ang buong gulong w/o cutting the chain or turning the pulley.

deflating the tire itself will not enable able the thieves to get anything. The tire is attached to the rim and the rim is attached to a holder to which the chain is attached to. If they want to steal something, they got to detach the rim from the holder first by fiddling with the lowering tab.

number001, by deflating the air from spare tire, the width of the tire itself will lessen, resulting in a little slack on the chain (about 2-3inches). If they push the spare tire upwards the holder can now be manipulated from its attachment in the rim.

I think its a good to check if your airvalve is facing upwards to make their work a little bit harder. Of course you can also buy a sparetire lock to be on the safe side.

BTW, I got this info from the gang members they target the Revo spare tire) who were busted by the police in Cebu.

They can get it without tools. Seems logical. Sa chain slack pala!

Yes sir. cuz if they bring something to turn the pulley, medyo cumbersome at can easily be seen by the guards (kung di kasabwat). While with the above mentioned technique all they need is a small tool like sa mga talyer yong pang-remove ng valve, pwede lang ipasok sa bulsa.

Nice guage Beebs, where can I buy one? How did you install the guage? Any drilling required? I'm presently using a Cyberdyne digital voltmeter that is inserted into the cigarette lighter plug or auxillary power point.

hello otep, tnx for the excellent comments on the ABS. it's great to see folks on this website putting real valuable technical sense on issues at a free price!

it won't be long til i replace my tires. so i will surely look for the ones with sticky threads. got any ideas what brands or types of tires i should look for? if it will be too much, please don't bother.

tnx a lot man! you've been of great help!

To all...im (actually us) a new fortuner owner , got it only 4 weeks back. ive been reading and searching and learning a lot about the cars performance and anything about it...and this forum has it..so i joined in....ive got a 2.7 A/T, the ride is bumpy but thats expected considering the frame structure. ive seen a lot of comments and advises regarding AT driving, although M/T is still a good choice for me. the other half prefers AT. just completed the 1000Km service and couldnt wait to test the "Shift on the fly" thing when i hit the sands later. ive seen a lot of complains regarding the breaks, have not done some hard breakings yet but its good to test that to see how this car will do when it has to be done. i always move with the 3 then flick it to D when it hits around 2.5-3K RPM, i just love it when it moves so smooth. on an uphill if from a standstill i start with 2, but whenevr the car is moving i dont downshift till its only 40-30KM/hr. (flat road) engine breaking is still a good habit. the only down thing for me, there is no indication on the the dash or shift lever where your gear is positioned . ...thats all for now.

Congrtas on your new ride. I too enjoy kicking down the gear to 2 when overtaking. Sarap ng biglang hatak. The gear indicator should be on the right side gauges along with the fuel and temp indicators .

2 tanong lang po to our experts.

1ST for A/T gears, does shifting of gears while the accelerator is on, pose any problem especially on the long term. read on toyotas manual this is a "DON'T".

2ND, am sure you guys are not impressed on the fortuners sound of the alarm (engage-disengage.) i once parked near a tricycle and was so embarassed that his horn/busina sounds exactly as my alarm when i engaged it. my officemates also despises my car - pogi, muscular and brusko, but the alarm is like a tweety bird. i took off the wire that leads to the horn. but always check the car is closed through the door handle and also the signal lights flashing when i trigger the alarm. where can i buy a horn, just the horn, that can replace toyota's tweety bird horn.

look forward to hearing inputs from you guys. thanks in advance.

RE: shifting: Just as long as you're not street racing, it doesn't hurt to manually shift it every once in a while when you need to kick down immediately to overtake. That's why the Fortuner was designed with a stepped shift gate, to make shifting easier. That's also why it's so easy to slide the lever sideways into "3" from "D", to make highway overtaking easier.

Simply, you're not doing anything that the transmission doesn't do itself. As long as you don't downshift into 1st gear while doing 100 km/h or shift into "D" from "N" while revving your engine to 4000 rpms, nothing bad will happen to your transmission.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Errr...You don't have to disconnect any wires. If you dont want the alarm to beep whenever you arm or disarm, you can simply deactivate it but albeit in a complicated, and laborous manner as dictated in the owner's manual (see page 27). Or you can ask your dealer to silence it for you.
