Yes, you can do step by step analysis and replacement.

You can have the GAS Tank replaced with new one or have it repaired - this is your choice.
You can have your Filler Cap replaced with new one or just dismantled it and cleaned - this is a choice also.
You can have the Charcoal Canister replaced or not - yes again, this is a choice.

What Toyota recommends was to replace these three vital parts, what we have was a choice - either we follow this or seek other alternative solution.

    Safe Driving everyone !

I was observing my Innova's gas tank very closely eversince I saw this thread.

to avoid pressure difference between gas tank and outside air, i drilled a small hole thru the gas cap in some of my other vehicles. after years of ordinary use, not once did water enter the cap.
i did this because my engine was dieseling.. it kept going even after i turned it off. the positive pressure in the tank was pushing fuel into the cylinders..
i wanted to get to the tank's breather tube, but it warranted some bigtime distruncating.. the hole job was much easier..

i did not want to destroy the oem cap. so, i used a replacement cap to drill a hole thru..

me? ma-alaga? i celebrated my car's out-of-warranty by having my change oil in the neighborhood gas station! and that's about the only TLC i do.
now i bring it into the casa only for collision repair (in-house insurance, e. no hassle.)
yes, you can probably call me lucky..
    heh heh.

I also encountered this problem in my Innova's fuel tank last year. I often wondered what the thumping sound I hear under the vehicle. I later found out it was coming from the gas tank after I observed the vehicle with the engine off in my garage. It was probably the tank expanding/collapsing due to the vacuum inside.

Eventually, the tank started to leak. Malas ko pa I was in Anilao at that time. I found a talyer and the mechanic placed a rubber strip under the leak to minimize the flow. Then I brought it to Toyota C5 where they replaced the gas tank with a brand new one.

After 8 months, I noticed my tank leaking again... at the same spot! I went back to Toyota C5 to complain and informed them that they should have replaced the charcoal filter and filler cap when they replaced the tank. I said it was likely the cause why the tank leaked again. Or maybe, they really did not my old tank and just repaired it that's why it leaked at the same spot again! The car is still in Toyota and I'm waiting for their assessment.

    What do you think?

when i had gas cap cover problems before, i just got a generic cap cover and drilled a very small hole right thru.. no problem since. and no, i did not smell gas fumes by the drilled cap, neither did i suffer worse fuel mileage..
in the olden days, it was the tank itself that had a breather tube, and the filler caps were airtight thingees..
