*qtshecu,
Here's my practice:
1. Shifting up- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th (In order)
2. Shifting down- Depende. Usually, from current gear, Neutral ako palagi (No intention to overtake or Not sure kung ano next move ko). Then, depende sa speed and RPM (this will take cross-checking or feeling), I shift to the desired gear (Nasa manual naman). Say, from 5th gear-Neutral-then desired gear.
I found the practice helpful sa mga sudden stop or intention to stop. Brake na lang ang tinatapakan ko. Hindi ako namamatayan ng makina. I saw this practice among jeepney/taxi drivers many years back. For me, It really helps.
May nabasa ako dati na di daw safe na iwan ang car sa neutal while moving, you will never know if you will need engine braking or sudden acceleration daw kasi. Kung gradual ang pag slow down ko, I downshift sequencially. So para if I need power, gas na lang ang tatapakan. Nasa right gear na ako.
Use engine brake to support the brakes to prevent over heat ng brakes.
Driving tip: In a 2-lane road, when overtaking, do not upshift in the middle of the overtaking maneuver. Up shift only when you are safely in front of the overtaken vehicle. Why?
Comments to these tips are welcomed/encouraged.
I agree somewhat.

pag A/T pano ang engine break? nararamdaman ko yan minsan pag downhill.. tapos ni release ko yung gas without stepping on the break.. parang nag slow down sya with engine breaking..
I don't own an Avanza, I do have a Civic and Accord A/T but I am sure it also applies.... Use the lower gears like D3, 2, and L. The lower the gear used the stronger the engine breaking so if you want maximum engine breaking use L. Use this for steep downhills pero be warned it also consumes more gas than the standard D gear so use it only when needed..... Hope that helps....

It is my practice lalo na sa 2 lane road lang, for safety purposes, when the overtaking car comes abreast of me, I slow down a bit to give the overtaking car plenty of room to maneuver. Kasi, kung di ko bibigyan ng room, tapos bigla lang me kasalubong, ang tendency ng overtaking car is to swerve unto your lane, which may cause unwanted accidents.
