December 6th, 2006 12:17 AM #122usually if you upgrade to a bigger size...fuel economy goes down due to higher rolling friction...bka sa nitrogen yang dagdag mo sa fuel mileage...

Hmmm.. based on experience, using nitrogen will not necessarily give you better fuel mileage. It also does not necessarily follow that you get a better ride. What nitrogen does is provide you with consistent tire pressure despite the change in tire temperature. So if the dealer puts in 30 psi, this tire pressure will remain at 30 psi despite having measured the tire cold or after a long run. Fuel mileage will improve slightly because of this consistent pressure, as against a fluctuating pressure, say from 28 cold to 32 hot. Tire wear will also not be as bad because of the consistent pressure.
*thumper,
In this case, since your fuel mileage improved despite a bigger wheel, you can probably attribute the improvement to nitrogen. But that's probably just because they filled you up with perhaps a higher psi compared to what you usually use. And during the course of your measurement, that psi remained the same.

December 6th, 2006 01:05 PM #124Thanks to all for their inputs.
Loaded full tank on crv this morning with and topped it up with 37 liters. Per odometer I traveled 288 kms since last full tank giving me 7.78 km / liter. By the way automatic ang crv ko and I just use shell unleaded regularly.
> Have always maintained tire pressure at 30 psi, both for original as well as new bigger tires.
> If odometer discrepancy due to change to bigger tire diameter, hindi ba dapat it should reflect a lower reading - although one tire revolution for the bigger diameter tire will have more distance. This is assuming the odometer is calibrated based on one revolution of a wheel.
Mukhang kailangan natin ng math expert! Thanks!

This is something that nitrogen does more consistently than oxygen. The 30 psi on your bigger wheel and tire combo is consistently 30 psi throughout the entire usage cycle, barring any leaks through a puncture or faulty valve. The 30 psi of oxygen on your original wheel and tire combo is not consistently 30 psi through your usage. It can go up or down depending on the tire temp. These factors are what have contributed to your better mileage now.

Actually, bigger tires should show less kilometers travelled per liter of gas.
The change may not be from nitro, per se, but from proper inflation pressure or lower rolling resistance. Some newer tires, like Michelin's XM series, have very low rolling resistance (although I prefer the shorter braking distances I get from sportier tires).
I've attached a tire calculator to this post, so you can compare your stock tires to your new tires. Just rename it from the *.doc format to *.xls format so excel can open it. Tsikot won't let me load it as an excel file, hehehe.

On another note... I used Nitro before, but felt no benefits from it. But I'm on low profile sports tires. Others swear by it, but I notice it's mostly the SUV set, guys riding on big balloon tires.
Doesn't hurt to find out, I guess... 50-100 pesos per tire isn't so extravagant... I spend 20 pesos in tips every time I get to the gas station and there's already a service person sitting at the air pump...Last edited by niky; December 6th, 2006 at 02:06 PM.

December 6th, 2006 04:02 PM #127Thanks guys !
Dami talagang factors.
In the end looks like proper pressure, good set of tires, good maintenance and good driving habits still is the best combination.

Yep yep! Zaktow!
Pero like niky said, if you've got the money, go for it and see if it works for youIf it does, ayowz! If not, at least you just spent P200 for 4 tires instead of P150 per tire at some locations. Or kung libre pa with the tires yung nitro, e d nothing to lose
