Maganda na naman ang laban sa LinggoMayol vows to finish off champ Calderon this time
09/10/2009 | 08:34 PM
After fighting unbeaten WBO lightflyweight titlist Ivan Calderon to a six-round technical draw, Filipino prospect Rodel Mayol vowed to finish off the Puerto Rican champ when they meet again on Saturday in Puerto Rico (Sunday in Manila).
“I’m coming to get the title. I already showed I can beat him (the first time we faced off), now I know I will beat him," Mayol, a fighter promoted by pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions, said, as quoted by FightFan.com.
Last June, the 27-year-old Mayol challenged Calderon in the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Joshua Clottey showdown in New York. The fight was stopped in the sixth round due to a cut on the champ’s forehead, caused by a constant accidental clash of heads. Two judges were split on Mayol and Calderon while the third called it a draw, allowing the pride of Puerto Rico to retain his crown.
The 34-year-old champ (32-0-1, 6 KOs) promised to frustrate Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KOs) for a second time.
“I took the rematch because I know I can win. I take nothing away from Mayol but he saw the wrong Calderon. I will show many people that at 34 I’m still hungry for victory," Calderon said.
He also guaranteed that the old “Iron Boy" Calderon – elusive and slick – will show up this time instead of the one who fought to impress the crowd in Calderon-Mayol I.
“That wasn’t the usual Calderon. This time I will not stand still; I will do my usual fight of hitting without getting hit and if he comes aggressive, I will just play him like I did with (Hugo Fidel) Cazares and (Nelson) Dieppa, " he added, referring to the previous challengers prior to Mayol.
“Batang Mandaue" Mayol, though, will be ready for this tactic.
“I expect Calderon to run and not engage but I also have prepared to run a marathon if that is what will take for me to win," Mayol told PhilBoxing.com in an earlier interview.
This will be the fourth crack at the world title for Mayol, who lost to WBC minimumweight king Eagle Den Junlaphan via decision in 2006 and to IBF light-flyweight holder Ulises Solis via KO in 2007 prior to his technical draw with Calderon. -GMANews.TV![]()

Donnie Nietes retained his minimumweight title while Rodel Mayol lost his fourth world title bid.
Nietes keeps world crownSadly this might have been Mayols last chance. He had really heavy hands when he first burst into the scene. In his first attempt against Eagle Kyowa he gave the champ all he could handle. But Kyowa kept his poise and came on strong in the championship rounds while Mayol faded. He had Ulises Solis down and hurt in his second chance until he got caught with a perfect counter which knocked him out. His two fights against Calderon has both been prematurely stopped due to cuts earning him a draw and a loss.
But Mayol falls a fourth time

MANILA, Philippines - Donnie Nietes kept his crown but Rodel Mayol blew his bid to become the country’s sixth world champion this year, losing by technical decision to Puerto Rican champion Ivan Calderon.
The 27-year-old Nietes retained his World Boxing Organization minimumweight title with a 12-round split decision over hometown boy Manuel Vargas at the El Palenque de la Feria in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico.
Mayol, who fell to 25-4-1, failed in his fourth attempt at a world crown when his rematch with Calderon was stopped in the seventh round after the Puerto Rican suffered a nasty cut on the forehead due to a headbutt.
When the WBO light flyweight bout was halted at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey, a bustling barrio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Calderon was leading with identical 68-65 scores on two judges’ cards, while Mayol was up, 68-65, on the card of the third.
Their June 13 faceoff in New York ended in a bloody technical draw, allowing the Puerto Rican to keep his title. In that fight, Calderon (33-0-1) also sustained a cut on the forehead.
Nietes (25-1-3, 14 KOs) won on the scorecards of two judges, 118-110 and 116-110, while the third picked Vargas, 116-112.
In the undercard, Filipino Z Gorres (29-2-2, 15 KOs) scored a fifth-round TKO win against Mexican former world champ Cruz Carbajal.
The main event of the fight card, dubbed “Latin Fury II,” saw Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. making short work of American Jason LeHoullier with a first-round stoppage.
The four other Filipino world champions are IBO light welterweight and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, WBO super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona, WBA 115 lb interim champion Nonito Donaire Jr. and IBF lightflyweight ruler Brian Viloria.
oo yun kay nietes lang pinalabas...
