It is a good thing that wife and myself are not.
However, may history sa side ni misis, kaya we are carefully watching the food that we eat, especially because of our kids....
Is it true that hereditary diabetes occurs every other generation? TIA.

Sa pagkakaalam ko, though I'm not a genetics expert, diabetes manifests directly into the next generation. If both parents are diabetics, the offspring has a 50% chance getting the disease. If one parent is diabetic, the chance goes down to 25%. The risk goes up if there are diabetes in the bloodline.
It is also a lifestyle disease wherein obesity and sedentary lifestyle contributes significantly to development of the disease.
So, kung strong ang family history for diabetes, tapos, obese na wala pang exercise, the chance of getting diabetes is quite high, and at a younger age, at that.
In many instances, kahit walang family history, pero obese, sedentary, diet is high in fat and carbohydrates as those served in fast food chain stores and restaurants, halos walang gulay na kinakain, fast pace at stressful ang buhay, diabetes may still develop.
Again, like I have said, I'm not an expert on this, but just sharing what I have read and remember on the subject.Last edited by ooba99; June 15th, 2008 at 05:44 AM.

Can diabetes be reversed? eg a person has a high blood sugar, then it goes down or becomes stable for x number of months, can a person be taken off meds?
My brother had diabetes kasi in his mid 20s. His weight was normal and my brother was not even fond of eating sweets and had an active lifestyle. Then my Mom had it in her 60s. I am afraid that I am very prone to have diabetes! The problem is I love sweets. I cannot survive a day without eating pastry or chocolateMy last check up was a year ago and my blood sugar was very much normal.
Lately, I have been very sleepy and sluggish. I drink more water too. Yesterday I slept almost the whole day! I only woke up to eat and go to mass. I've always been paranoid about my sugar. The last time I had the same symptoms was because of my hypothyroid. Now I am scared to go to the doctor and find out that my blood sugar is high! I had my Mom take my sugar with the prick thingie as soon as I woke up and it registered at 60+. She said it is low daw. Diba pag diabetic taas baba sugar? I am thinking if I postpone my doctor's visit baka lalo lumala

Know your family history. There are two types of diabetes; acquired and hereditary.
Madali lang mawala ang acquired thru meds and change of lifestyle. Pero pag hereditary, mahirap yan.

June 30th, 2014 08:13 PM #37diabetes is genetic, triggered by still-controversial factors.
diabetes, once it starts, is a lifelong disease.
it can not be cured using current science. it can only be controlled.
strict food control and exercise, are the key, along with proper medication (oral meds and/or insulin injections).
your low, 60+ blood sugar, may be the reason why you felt like a shell-less snail (slug-ish).
i may be scaring you when i say that some diabetes patients first show hypoglycemia (!) as pre-diabetes manifestation... but hey! scaring the patient is a popular "feature" in diabetes control.
you have to go to your doctor, so's you can get a good profile regarding your blood sugar levels.
and you are not alone.. estimates put diabetes at 1 per 8 humans...

June 30th, 2014 08:54 PM #40there is a belief that given time, a pre-diabetic will become a full-blown diabetic..
but as to how long that will take, is a big question mark..
avoidance or "significantly limiting" the intake of simple sugars: soft drinks, candies, pastries, ice cream, sugary foods.., is a must.
it is said that diabetes necessitates a change in lifestyle... it is not an absolute no-no to eating carbohydrate-rich or sugary foods, but rather, a limitation of intake. yung dati'y isang tasa, ay isang kutsara na lang ngayon..
but think of the good side... se-***y ka lalo, dahil papayat ka!
but i agree... sugar-free confectionaries taste bad, regardless of what non-sugar sweeteners are used..
Same design language across the range is fine Porsche, Audi, VW, Lexus and Mazda are all like...
