US CDC says JN.1 variant accounts for about 15% to 29% of COVID cases

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Friday that the COVID subvariant JN.1 makes up about an estimated 15% to 29% of cases in the United States as of Dec. 8, according to the agency's projections.

The agency said that it expects JN.1 COVID cases will continue to increase as a proportion of total cases as JN.1 is currently the fastest growing in the country.

JN.1 is closely related to the subvariant BA.2.86 of the virus, which the agency has been tracking since August.

The agency said that JN.1 was first detected in the U.S. in September and was earlier grouped with BA.2.86 in the agency's data tracker.

The health agency added that there currently is no evidence that JN.1 presents an increased risk to public health relative to other currently circulating variants and an updated shot could keep Americans protected against the variant.

Scientists have been tracking HV.1 since it was first reported in the U.S. in the late summer. In October and November, it rapidly overtook other variants, including EG.5, aka Eris, to become the most prevalent strain, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HV.1 is currently responsible for the largest proportion of COVID-19 cases, but other variants continue to emerge and gain speed.

During a two-week period ending on Dec. 9, HV.1 accounted for nearly 30% of new COVID-19 infections in the U.S., per the CDC. After HV.1, the next most common variant was JN.1, a new offshoot of BA.2.86 or Pirola, which made up 21% of cases, followed by EG.5. Unlike its predecessors, HV.1 has yet to gain a catchy nickname.

A total of 12,757 Covid-19 cases were reported during the 49thh Epidemiological Week (ME 49/2023) from Dec 3-9 compared to 6,796 cases the previous week, says Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan.

He said that although there has been an increase in new cases, the overall situation in Malaysia was still under control and not a burden to the existing healthcare facilities.

He said the majority of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia involved mild symptoms and not requiring hospital treatment.

"So far, no new variants have been detected in Malaysia. The variants still circulating in Malaysia are the Omicron variant with subvariants XBB.1.16, XBB.1.5 and EG.5.

"Although this variant is known to have a high rate of infectivity, it does not cause severe infections,” he said.

Dr Muhammad Radzi also advised the public to continue taking preventive measures, including maintaining a high level of personal hygiene, wearing face masks if symptomatic and getting Covid-19 vaccine booster jabs.

Japan flu cases surge to warning level at fastest pace in 10 years - The Japan Times

The central government on Friday said the average number of influenza patients at thousands of designated medical institutions nationwide had hit warning levels at their fastest pace in 10 years.

Across roughly 5,000 institutions, 166,690 patients had been reported in the week through Dec. 10, averaging 33.72 people per facility and surpassing the warning level of 30, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The rapid spread reflects lowered influenza immunity after cases had dropped in recent years amid anti-infection measures implemented against the coronavirus pandemic.

Health experts also say that the influenza virus is spreading about a month earlier than normal.

Coronavirus cases have also been increasing for the third consecutive week, authorities said. Experts have called for caution amid fears both viruses could spread further as year-end and New Year's social gatherings take place in Japan.

School and class-specific closures have been required at 6,382 educational facilities nationwide in the week through Sunday, the ministry said.

While influenza outbreaks typically occur in the winter and the end of spring, this year saw an unusual increase in cases from August.

The ministry cautioned against the flu in October when cases exceeded the advisory level for that month of 10 people per institution.

"Individual measures for preventing infection are the same as those for COVID-19, including getting vaccinated, wearing masks, and avoiding crowded places," said Nobuhiko Okabe, head of the Kawasaki City Institute for Public Health.
