this is what peer reviewers do.
they read the paper. they look up the methodologies. they check the numbers. they check the data from which the papers are based on. if everything seems to be good, then the paper is approved for publishing.
but peer reviewers are also human. they are not privy to facts not divulged by nature.
there are many examples of peer-reviewed scholarly articles, that have since been proven wrong.
einstein said, "God does not play dice with the universe."
well, heisenberg proved him wrong. "God does play dice with the universe."
and hawking put it over one more: "not only does God play dice; He sometimes throws them where they can not be seen."
"there is no long-term study" is not to be interpreted as "it is safe, now and forever!", or "it is un-safe, caveat kayo!".
it simply means, "there is no long-term study" at the present time.
research involving children has always been a sensitive issue.
that is perhaps why there are very visible pros and cons.
"we must weigh what we may win, by what we might lose."
basically,
it is saying that for the time being, there is no good evidence suggesting of long-term complications.
maybe after 3 years... 20 years, someone will... notice something.
who knows... maybe science will throw us a curve ball...
sabi nga, "only two types of people do not change their minds: the dead, and fools".
