That’s been reflected in Bloomberg’s Covid Resilience Ranking in January, which shows outbreaks peaking and ebbing more quickly, and omicron’s mildness and the proliferation of vaccinations keeping deaths low. That’s allowed places from the U.K. to Thailand and Ireland to Finland to remove restrictions within weeks, lifting their scores in the monthly lineup of the best and worst places to be in the pandemic.

With the exception of China and Hong Kong—still sticking to their zero-tolerance approach—countries on the ranking have now largely aligned on the same strategy: staying open, while driving vaccine uptake to keep people safe. January’s No. 1, the United Arab Emirates, is a key proponent of the approach, while also benefiting from a smaller omicron outbreak than elsewhere.

With vaccines as a key differentiator on the ranking, the Philippines drops to the bottom of the list again at No. 53, as the previous supply issue for developing countries evolves into a logistical challenge of reaching people in rural places where there’s no health infrastructure.

Just over a month ago, omicron seemed like the new threat that would reset the pandemic. Now it appears to be more of a catalyst to exit the crisis conditions that have largely reigned for two years now. The light at the end of the tunnel may just be coming closer.

Why the Philippines is once again the worst place to be in COVID

The Philippines fell again at the bottom of Bloomberg’s Covid Resilience Ranking of the best and worst places to be in amid the pandemic after tighter movement restrictions were reimposed to stem record infections.

After ending in December a three-month streak occupying the last spot, the Southeast Asian nation slipped three notches and ranked lowest again this month, dragged by record-high positivity rates in mid-January, when almost half of those who took Covid tests actually have the virus.

Businesses from banks to airlines were disrupted, while hospital beds filled up anew as the Philippines again topped Southeast Asia in daily cases. Mobility in malls and recreation areas plunged, tighter capacity limits were imposed on restaurants, and the unvaccinated were told to stay home.

In contrast, neighbors Malaysia and Thailand have risen from the ranking’s lowest rungs, as they didn’t have huge infections spikes and with around 70% of their respective populations fully vaccinated.

No need 5 day hotel quarantine...

Effective Feb 1, fully vaccinated passengers will be required to present negative RT-PCR test taken within 48 hrs prior to departure from country of origin, and they will no longer be required to undergo facility quarantine.

Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travelers would be required to undergo facility-based quarantine until the release of their negative RT-PCR test taken on the 5th day.

Effective Feb 10, fully vaccinated nationals of non-visa required countries shall be allowed to enter the Philippines, subject to several conditions.

As with previous variants, the vast majority of people infected with omicron have a mix of symptoms that resolve relatively quickly and don't require hospital care.

And doctors are finding many of these cases tend to look like an ordinary upper respiratory infection. In other words, what you think of as the common cold.

"It's mostly that runny nose, sore throat and nasal congestion,"says Dr. John Vanchiere, the associate director of the Center for Emerging Viral Threats at LSU Health Shreveport. "The cough is milder [than previous variants], if there's any cough at all, and fever seems to be a little less common."

This fits with early data from the U.K. showing that fever and cough are not as prevalent with omicron cases there and that the five top symptoms are runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing and sore throat.

With omicron, the symptoms also come on more quickly once you're infected. Several studies have found that the incubation period — the time it takes to develop symptoms after being exposed — is about three days. In contrast, delta took about four days, and the original variant took more than five.
