am actually "baguhan " na nahihilig sa stories of World War II (Tnx to PS2 Call of duty and other war games hehehe)
But i think The Asia Pacific War is the most interesting compared to the Russian effort and Euro allies.
But the thing is kokonti yata magagandang movie or books on Philippine Related WWII
Base ko lang yan sa pagahahanap sa mga local bokstore.

Iyon ba ang mga naiwan na planes sa atin? What we called "Tora-Tora"?
flagg, I thought so, too, hehe (BMW/Benz).
Btw, the Me-110 was also a day fighter early in the war. But events during the Battle of Britain showed that it was thoroughly outclassed even by the Hurricane - so much that as bomber escorts, they had to provide Me-109 cover for the 110's. Relegated to nightfigthing where it has space for the bulky radar equipment and the opposing aircraft is a bomber.

Jun, just minor things ... most accounts credit Hartmann with 352 kills, all of them on the Eastern front and If I'm not wrong, his only mount was the Me-109. His kills include 6 American P-51D's, but over Romania.
Kill scores will always be in dispute, but I do agree that Germans had higher scores because of the fact that they flew until the war's end or until they died, plus the sheer number of opposing aircrafts. The good thing about rotating pilots is that at the end of the day, you can muster more better-trained pilots than your enemy ... like in the Marianas Turkey Shoot.
Max, regarding the "Tora-Tora" ... T-28D Nomad 'yon. Wala na yatang lumilipad ngayon sa PAF.

Noong '89 coup ni Gringo, we were traveling in Mandaluyong. I saw 2 Tora-toras who seemed to be dogfighting. Interesting talaga to watch. I dunno lang if they were shooting at each other cuz it was daytime and naka-A/C car namin so cannot hear the outside.
Suddenly, 1 of the Tora-toras did something weird. Parang nag-sudden brake sya sa sky. Tapos it fell straight down. None of that movie stuff where the plane glides down and crashes... it just went straight down parang elevator.
After it disappeared under the rooftops, may maliit na smoke me nakita. The other Tora-tora left. 10 years ago, I'd say it got hit. But now am more cynical, feeling ko naubusan ng gas yun.
Btw, you guys heard of the Me163 Komet? Hehe, that was one crazy plane.

I was previously fascinated by late model Japanese fighters and had model kits of the N1K2 Shiden Kai, J2M Raiden, Ki-84 Hayate, Ki-100 (re-engined Ki-61 Hien), Ki-43 Oscar, A6M5 Zero-Sen, etc. But they were all destroyed when I was shipped to Korea back in the mid 90's. I have suspicions about old grudges. But, I found it strange that every single one of my Japanese aircraft model kits were destroyed while my model kits of US aircraft and armor were untouched. In any case, the Korean shipping company reimbursed me for the losses.
Anyway, another box art from an Otaki 1/48 Ki-100 (one of the destroyed kits):

I have a picture of Priller's plane from the FW190 booklet of Squadron/Signal Publications. The print seems to be accurate except for the "1" which should have the same white outline as the "3". It looks like it is, just not clearly.Originally Posted by flagg
Nitpicky stuff. But, among modelers, it gets far worse than that.
Anyway, my number 2 favorite is the P-51 too which is rendered quite nicely by Jane's WW2 Fighters:

Trivia:
- The Me163 Komet only flew operationally with JG400.
- About 364 were delivered to the Luftwaffe.
- After about a year of service, it shot down only 16-20 enemy planes.
- More Me163's were lost to landing accidents.
A couple of graceful-looking WWII planes ...

BTW, the city where I live prides itself as the hometown of the Spitfire ... where it was designed, produced, and had it's maiden flight. Last March 5 was the 70th anniversary of the flight, and 5 Spitfires flew the same route. The lead plane was a converted 2-seater and the passenger was one of the original test pilots. I was one of the thousands of "uzi's", and it was great to hear again the roar of those Rolls Royce Merlin engines (which was also used on the Mustang after the Allison).

I mean it's got at least a Merlin 61 exhaust which was used starting with the Mark VII and later while the airframe looks like a Mk II-Mk Va (no 20mm cannon yet).
Edit. The Spitfire is a close 3rd behind the Hellcat and Mustang (and ahead of the P-38) as my all -time favorite Allied WW2 aircraft. My favorite ETO Axis aircraft is the Ju-88 because of its adaptability to be just about anything from fighter to dive bomber.
OT: History International is currently showing "The Los Banos Raid" which I'm recording on the pc.

It could've been from another plane ... not an unusual practice just to get a flying sample, as the pic is from a Hungarian siteOriginally Posted by Jun aka Pekto

The most probable explanation would be that the Spitfire came in different wing packages (A to E) with the A-wing being guns-only, while the D-wing didn't had guns nor cannons. So the first to be armed with cannons is the Mk.Ib, with 19 Squadron the first to use them during the Battle ... although jamming was a serious problem.
*badkuk - It was intended as a long-range day fighter, although the Beaufighter gained prominence as a night fighter and naval strike aircraft.
ic. quite a nice looking plane though. come to think of it, i have seen beaufighters firing rockets at shipsOriginally Posted by straightsix
di ba medyo huli na nadevelop ung spitfires? afaik, the RAF already had a few spitfires during the Battle of Britain, pero mas marami silang hurricanes. discovery channel had a documentary on the hurricane; apparently, the body/shell wasn't made out of metal, or even wood. they just draped irish linen over the tailend section of the plane 'coz they were in a rush to build as many as they can.
another amazing story, dunno if you WWII buffs already know about it: apparently one German bomber managed to slip past the RAF defenses, and was on its way to bomb London. one pilot on a hurricane gave chase, but either the guns jammed or ran out of ammo. frustrated, he rammed the tailend of the German bomber with the "shoulder" of the hurricane( i could only assume he was on a perpendicular trajectory to do so), slicing off it's tail. the German bomber of course crashed, but the hurricane remained flying. in fact ung mismong pilot ang nag narrate nung encounter. amazing B)
The Spitfire's 1st flight (1936) was about 5 months after the Hurricane's ... hindi naman ganuon ka-late. And it was already operational at the start of the War in 1939. In fact, during the 1st week of the war, the first victims of the Spitfire were 2 Hurricanes from a different squadron![]()
The Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter. Made of tubular metal and fabric covering, it equipped more squadrons than the Spitfire at the start of BoB. And as one result of the directive that Hurricanes should deal with the German bombers while Spitfires tangle with the escorts, Hurricanes shot down more enemy planes than the Spitfires. They were also faster and cheaper to manufacture.
The Hurricane pilot you mentioned was Sgt. Ray "Arty" Holmes but unfortunately, he lost half his wing and his plane also crashed after ramming that Do-17. There's this show called Time Team (archeology) that dug up the remains of his Hurricane live on UK-Ch5 TV about 2 years ago, with good ol' Ray present at the dig site near Buckingham Palace ... though he showed more interest on the female presenter rather than the dig. Sadly, Arty died last year after a 2-yr battle with cancer.

A nice documentary about the Red October exercises is on The Military Channel. Good matchup of USN F-18's (aggressors) vs German Luftwaffe MiG-29's.
