350d ata ngayon e 38k na lang sa hidalgo with local warranty pa. i have been using my 300d for almost 3 years na and it still serve its purpose. happy pa rin ako. kung bibili ka ng dslr buy ka kagad ng good external flash and zoom lens. di ka matutuwa sa kit na kasama ng camera mo.

Just wondering, if one reads the forum on sites like dpreview.com, one can get this impression that DSLR seem to have "reliability" issues and at times may need trips in and out of the repair shops. For Dslr owners here, is this really true or those people posting are just too nitpicky and at the same time ignorant of their tools. Problems I read are mostly regarding the camera's focus and shutter. These are things that simple point and shoot camera dont seem to suffer as much, based on my research.

i'm just curious as to which system or camera you are referring to? is it all dslr's in general? or a specific one? or brand(s)?

for me, I'm very satisfied sa 350D ko. more than 1 year na sa akin 'to pero di pa naman kinailangan dalin sa service center. pag bili mo ng dslr dapat talaga bili ka agad ng good external flash at kung kaya pa samahan mo na ng zoom lens or prime lens. pero kung gipit talaga a DSLR with kit lens and external flash will do.

ganyan talaga pag dslr kasi palit palit ng lense. anything can happen like dust entering the dslr body.

pero sobra fulfilling, like tinkering with shutter speed/exposure (for example, slow mo rushing car or water) or with aperture/depth of field (for example, focusing with blur background etc ...). these things you cant simply do with a point and shoot. add to that mas malaki ang sensor dslr's compared to point and shoot. kaya kahit 5 megapix lang ng dslr mas ok pa din kuha compared to a 6 megapix point and shoot.

so much to learn talaga.

I'm curious too since I read DPreview almost every week. Maybe you're referring to the 1st gen DSLRs. Yes, these babies had some issues pero with the advancement of DSLR technology, these issues have been resolved. Maybe you're also referring to users who have moved from one system to another e.g. from Nikon to Canon. Complaints are normal there.

As for focus and shutter issues, even some film-based SLRs have these sorts of problems. It's how the user would compensate with his/her shot to negate the effects of these issues that matter. Sabi nga sa taas na post, it's the Indian that matters - not the pana.

Taking off from what OldBlue had posted, kahit sa film-based SLRs eh madalas din ang palit ng lens. Ako, I don't have a DSLR but I have two 35mm film SLRs: one that is fully manual (Nikon FM-10) and one that has automatic and manual functions (Canon 300V/Rebel). As you would see, I'm using two systems - Nikon and Canon pero wala naman akong problema so far. IMO, mas challenging ang film-based SLR photography using a manual camera kase naka-salalay sa knowlege mo about photography ang ganda ng shot mo. Of course, kahit anong galing sa tech stuff ang isang photobug pero hindi gaano marunong sa pag-gamit ng lighting (natural or otherwise) eh malamang pumalpak pa rin yung shot.

usually there are manufacturing problems/defects with early camera DSLRs. my gf bought a Nikon D70 a few months after its market release (in 2004). after 8 months it became defective (blinking green light in CF card LED indicator). i found out that it was a common problem for D70 cameras manufactured from a certain date. i sent it back to Nikon for repair (FOC kahit outside warranty period, Nikon recognized its a manufacturing defect). I got the cam back after 2 weeks and it never failed since.

about the shutter problems, i think DSLRs have at least about 50K shutter count lifespan. other models can go as high as 100K.

True, true.

But there are recorded cases whereny the shutter lifespan went 1K to even 5K beyond they rated cycle. But really, everything depends on use. While the shutter could be repaired/refurbished, it is probably more trouble or cost than it would be worth.

Come to think of it, how does one efficiently and accurately measure shutter lifespan? I've read that some photobugs count the number of actuations. I'm curious on how these are counted. I've heard that there's a software that can be used to count the acutations for the Canon 1D.

about shutter counts, you can consider this as the mileage of your camera. the number of shots/actuations from a camera is recorded in the Exif data of the D70-shot photo. i have a software to pull the shutter count for Nikon. i guess if the data is captured in Exif and with Exif being a standard across camera manufacturers, the software may work with other camera brands as well.

accessories, mem cards, printing?

accessories: its the same as film SLRs lens, filters, etc. Printing: a lot lesser than film because you can review and adjust your shots quicker sa screen and rightafter sa PC. printing is only a second option unlike sa film wherein you need to develop right away to see your subjects. yun nga lang mas nakakatuto ang film esp if you will start with the manual op. from the light, distance, and opening computations. it's going to be very easy pagdating sa digital. BTW i'd go with any model Nikon digital SLR basta 8 megapixels up. my two cents po.

I think I'm one of the lucky few to have a Nikon D70s and 18-200mm VR lens... One thing I can tell you guys is that the VR lens is one heck of a mean piece of glass!!!! I coupled it with a SB800 flash unit and the combinations are now endless!!!!
