Save for the few dozen people in TPC who actually care about hardware, an expensive PC doesn't really impress anyone.

If they wanted to impress people, they'd do better by actually getting a good education instead of bragging about a PC that'll be obsolete in 2 years.

Of course it's their (parents') money, so they can do what they want with it. But nasasayangan lang ako.

what's the point of computational power?

    1. for a multimedia PC, computational power is everything because it's essential for rendering and processing audio/video samples.
    2. for a gaming PC, it's needed to run games that run on crytek, frostbite, unreal engine
    3. for a 3D modeling enthusiast, I need it so I can render models with lots of polygons
    4. as a workstation pc, it's needed so your PC won't die from running macros (lol)
    5. mechanical keyboard master race

it's just so much more versatile

why pentium anniversary edition chip you say? because I'm an idiot who spent more on watercooling

and 2 cores are enough, to be honest.

it's the gpu that handles most of heavy lifting any way for 50% of my "work/hobby"

Yes, it's true that in those specialized uses, a faster CPU is always welcome. But let's look at the bigger picture here - out of all computer users in the world, how many have such demands for their computers?

Even just looking at the sample size of those who've replied to this thread, the vast majority do not require a high-end CPU. What more those who aren't interested in computers (and aren't likely power users either).

I just built my 3rd desktop 3 years ago. Bago yan, naka laptop na ko from 2008 up to mid 2012 (Asus N43). Kaso when I started into taking videos for events and weddings, sobrang bitin and I decided na bumuo ng isang video editing desktop

    Here's the specs:
Intel i7 4770k (previously 3770k but mobo went kaput)
Asus z87 deluxe (dating ASRock z77 extreme 6)
    16gb Ripjaws X 1866
    2x 128gb Samsung 830 SSD on RAID 1
    1 TB WD black
    1 TB WD blue
    Asus GTX 680 DC2 TOP 2gb GPU

I have a feeling na buo pa naman ang previous processor ko. Sayang naman at i7 din yun processor. Kelangan lang niya ng isang previous gen na mobo

Still got my Sempron 140 with amd780g chipset and slight OC from 2.7GHz to 3.01GHz. Onboard graphics for playing old games when I have the time (Torchlight 2 anyone?). Primarily used for school projects and web browsing/spotify by my daughter. Last upgrade I did for it was putting in a Transcend 120GB SSD and the last thing I replaced is an 18.5" LED monitor.

I'll probably set up another low-spec desktop when it eventually breaks down kasi sayang yung maiiwang parts and peripherals. It's also easier to swap out parts that wear out like the keyboard (faded keys and accumulated grime), monitor, and hard drive.

Bro have you tried unlocking your Sempron 140? Big jump in responsiveness with a dual-core compared to a single-core processor. If your PSU can handle it, you can even get a used Phenom X3 or X4 for under 2k.

    Do home servers count?

I've got one that's been running 24/7 for like 5 years now. It's our family's media server loaded with 8 hard drives on an HBA with a collective capacity of around 16.6 TB. Basic specs includes an AMD Athlon II X4 630 CPU and 8GB of RAM. However, it's a bit weak at streaming HD to more than a few devices. So for it to be able to transcode multiple 1080p streams, I am looking at upgrading it to at least a 3rd gen i7 3770 with a Z77 board, as they're cheaper now, used, especially with Skylake (6th gen) out.

Another, an HP Microserver loaded up with ESXi, is where my router/firewall (pfSense) resides, running as a VM. I experiment a lot in this department so I actually have 3 VMs in there (another pfSense and Sophos Copernicus).

last desktop ko was Q6600. nung makita ko CC receipts ko in 2 years amounting to 180k (di pa kasama yung cash paid items ), bumili ako laptop tapos benta desktop
sarap lang kasi mag OC kaya medyo na-addict ako.
    minimum of 50% at 60% stable q6600, e6600, e6300, a64 3000+ venice and more
a few motherboards in the process ..
max ko yata nasa 80% E6300 kaso tipong 2 minutes lang sa prime95

Unfortunately, either my Emaxx (j&w ang oem) board doesn't really support unlocking or my procie is one of those with a bad 2nd core. I already flashed an "unlock" rom from the manufacturer and the closest I got was seeing the name of the processor change in the initial BIOS screen followed by a reboot. I haven't been able to replicate it since.

Nakakahinayang lang kasi bumili ng 2nd hand procie na presyong almost brand new pa rin. Some people don't take depreciation into account when selling their items online. I also have this bad experience with tinkering with the processor (tried the pencil trick to unlock a Duron on an ECS k7s5a) and ending up with a seemingly dead board.

If the gf cannot source out a mobo in a few months, baka ibenta ko nalang talaga yung i7 ko. Meron pa nga akong i3 3220 dito na ginawa kong temporary processor habang inaantay yung i7 3770k ko, so meron akong dalawang processor na walang ginagawa dito

I'll let you know if I'm going to sell both processors

Currently using a desktop PC as Hypervisor; specs are pathetic so it's used mainly for playing around with new OSes. am planning to set up a beefier rig for my experiments. Mahal pa rin ng i5 :p

I still make do with my DIY PC: 2013 4 Ghz AMD FX-8350, 4 GB GTX 770, 8 GB DDR 3 RAM, Win 10 Professional

    I also have a 14" 2012 ASUS G46VW Rog (2.6 Ghz, 3.2 Ghz turbo), GTX 660m, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, Win 10

I also keep the very first 1.67 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini with OSX 10.6.8

I still keep a 2010 Toshiba Mini NB305-N600 Atom N550. It has a 2 GB RAM limit. So, I took out Win 10, Win 7 Starter. I replaced them instead with Win XP.

The eldest kid has a DIY PC: i5 4670k, R9 290x, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 plus her laptop

The youngest kid has a DIY PC: AMD A10-7850k, DDR5 GT 730, 8 GB RAM, Win 7

The wife has her Sager laptop and Mac Mini

Just Googling for your motherboard's exact model and looking up the specs. It has to be specific. You can also use CPUID/CPUZ to identify both the board model and the memory it's using.

Be careful when looking up the board's specs. Here's an example of two almost-identical boards from MSI, distinguished only by one letter:

    MSI P45-C51 - DDR3
    MSI P45T-C51 - DDR2

    DIY CoolerMaster Silencio 352 case

I still have my old Logitech Z-2300 speakers from 2005. The sub is my foot stool.

Toshiba 10.1" netbook and ASUS RoG 14" laptop at the flanks.

The monitor is still a 2010 Dynex 24" 1080p TV. It's the primary monitor for my gaming PC. I also dual-monitor it with the ASUS laptop when I'm doing my college courses.

Yes I do use them a lot.... My story.

our home network setup is at par or even better than small SO/HO business setups. one desktop unit runs on the basic Celeron processor with 2 GB RAM, with an old 128 GB hard disk. Runs on three network cards on VM. One VM runs PFSense with load balance functionalities, DHCP, Firewall and Network AV. The balance is that 75% of the bandwidth is assigned to the other desktop unit (details below), connected directly to a 4 port cabled hub. And the remaining 25% is assigned to the access points in the living room and in the bedroom. The desktop PC here is basic. No frills, no monitor, no keyboard and no mouse. Everything is controlled via IP.

the second desktop unit is a component of our home entertainment system. Runs on AMD A8, with 12 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD as its primary system and booting disk, 1 TB of the usual DASD as storage, dual monitors (1 29 inch Asus monitor and 1 19 inch LG), a Logitech mechanical gaming keyboard and a Logitech gaming mouse. The 29 inch monitor is attached to the desktop via HDMI - 1 (on Nvidia GeForce GTX 960) and the 19 inch monitor is connected via VGA. The other HDMI port sa 29" monitor is connected to a PS3 device, which is also connected via cable to the 4 port hub. Desktop runs on Win 10 professional. Meron din palang DVD drive ito. MoBo is an Asus Pro-Gamer and the speakers is an old Altec Lansing ATP-3 that I won in a raffle around 10 years ago (ganda pa din ng tunog).

Both desktops, the hub and the monitors are connected to a 500 VA APC UPS.

On mobility, wifey uses an IPAD. I use a Chromebook at home (which I usually share with my kid), but occassionally brings my work laptop home (a Lenovo ThinkPad E130) and the usual smartphones. They connect to the APs on the second floor and on the ground floor area. Internet connection is 2 mbps PLDT and 5 mbps Globe connected directly to the PFSense Desktop PC. The second floor Smart TV (which I got last December lang), connects to the 2nd floor AP.

Backup is done via DLink DNS 320 NAS with 2 TB storage directly connected to the 4 port hub. Eto na din yung file server namin sa house.

Now, I am trying to figure out how to put in a TV Plus console dun sa second PC.

My wife does the same with her 2011 Mac Mini in our bedroom. I have an older 2006 Intel Mac Mini hooked up to the living room TV.
