my smartphone has 4 gb of ram, which i thought was adequate for my use.
yet it crawls sometimes...
The Samsung Note 5 released in 2015 already had 4GB RAM. Today’s Android flagships have 12GB RAM, so running 4GB today will really be insufficient.

I find that buying a flagship and keeping it for longer is more efficient than buying a midrange phone that quickly gets obsolete.
