Minardi: Red Bull are exploring a possible change of F1 engine for 2015



World Champion Formula 1 team Red Bull could be on the market for a new engine supplier, in the wake of a problematic start to the 2014 season and the new V6 turbo era.

That is the claim of ex-Formula 1 team owner Gian Carlo Minardi, whose former team, still Faenza based, but now called Toro Rosso, is owned by the energy drink company.

Out of troubled engine supplier Renault’s four Formula 1 partners, including Toro Rosso, the senior Red Bull team managed the least mileage of all at the recent Jerez test.

Minardi, however, observed that – officially – the Red Bull-owned teams are sending out messages of “tranquillity and calm” about what many others believe is a crisis.

“According to circulating information, the situation seems more difficult than that and not easy to solve,” the 66-year-old wrote in a post in Italian, on his website.

“It seems that Red Bull are exploring a possible change of engine for 2015,” added Minardi.

He said he has also heard that Renault, struggling to solve the obvious problems with its turbo V6 ‘Power Unit’, has gone beyond the walls of its Viry factory and is now “shopping” around for technical fixes.

“That has practically never happened before as, quite rightly, Renault has always sought to preserve its technology,” said Minardi.

“This news can only feed suspicions of structural problems in the engine that are not easy to solve in the short term.

“Obviously, I hope to be proved wrong as soon as the testing in Bahrain, but undoubtedly we are living through a chaotic time in Formula 1,” he added. (GMM)

Wedding bells on the horizon for Jenson and Jessica



Jenson Button and long time girlfriend Jessica Michibata are engaged to be married.

Reports in Britain confirm that the two lovebirds, who often travel to grand prix races together, are engaged and that Michibata is sporting an impressive ‘teardrop diamond’ engagement ring as she attends testing in Bahrain with Button.

The news comes shortly after the passing of Button’s father John Button who died in January.

Button first met the Japanese model in 2008 in a hotel bar in Tokyo and eight months later, the pair started dating.

According to the Daily Mail: “It wasn’t until Jenson became Formula 1 World Champion in Brazil in 2009 that Jessica realised just how strong his love for her was, when he dedicated his win to her, live on television.”

A spokesperson for Button confirmed the news and revealed that the couple are “delighted”, but that no date has yet been set for the wedding. (GP247)

Feb.28 (GMM) Red Bull on Friday mocked suggestions Sebastian Vettel threw a "hissy fit" amid the world champions' early-season crisis in 2014.

As the new title-defending RB10 car and engine supplier Renault continue to struggle in pre-season testing, Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko this week warned world champion Vettel that "getting angry" was no solution.

But in a website posting by the 'Red Bull Spy' on Friday, the team said a "major news broadcaster" had gone a step too far by claiming German Vettel in fact threw "a hissy fit" recently before "refusing to drive the car because it wasn't very good".

Red Bull called the report "lurid speculation".

"I suppose it could be true. Maybe four World Championships really have turned him into a screaming primadonna," the 'Spy' said sarcastically.

Petrov gets 2014 DTM deal with Mercedes



Vitaly Petrov is again writing Russian motor racing history: In the upcoming DTM season, Russia’s first Formula 1 driver will also become the country’s first Russian DTM driver, as was announced by the 29-year-old Russian and Mercedes-Benz on February 28th, 2014, at a press conference held in the headquarters of Russian state television channel, Russia 2.

Petrov will make his race debut at the wheel of a DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé at the DTM season opener on May 4th in Hockenheim. Exactly 100 days before his first DTM race, the former Formula 1 driver on January 23th tested a DTM car with Mercedes-Benz for the first time in Portimão, Portugal. Last year, Petrov drove a Mercedes-Benz DTM ‘race taxi’ at the Moscow City Race around Red Square and at the DTM premiere at the Moscow Raceway.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, organisers at the Bahrain International Circuit have named the first corner in honour of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

The German, who remains in an induced coma following his skiing accident in December, not only won the inaugural race in 2004, one of his record 91 victories, he still holds the official lap record.

He also has strong connections with the BIC outside of his participation in racing and was directly involved in the early stages of the BIC's development, offering his own input into the design of the track, including the layout of turn one.

"With the support of his family, it is a great privilege to be able to honour arguably the greatest racing driver in the history of F1 and someone who the people of Bahrain hold close to their hearts.," said Zayed Al Zayani, Chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit. "From his first appearance at the BIC in 2004, he immediately became an inspiration for all those who love motorsport in the Kingdom and it is therefore natural for us to recognise him in this way."

"The team at the BIC continues to offer Michael and his family its best wishes," he added.

"Michael's family would like to thank the Bahrain International Circuit for this gesture," said Sabine Kehm, speaking on behalf of the Schumacher family, "acknowledging Michael's achievements in Formula One and interest in the BIC circuit design.

"We take it as a recognition for his passion for motorsport. I am convinced Michael will love the idea and feel very honoured about having a BIC corner named after him."
