Again you have to take into perspective US's past history when it comes to global participation. WW1 and WW2 they were reluctant combatants as mentioned before. Their leaders probably realized that they couldn't just sit idly by while other countries driven by an ideology different from theirs have so far affected them so much so that they were plunged into wars. That cannot be discounted lightly.

Russia should have stopped after the move in Crimea. That was an easy sell of an act as the people in that region supported it. This invasion of Ukraine is not, the people, free Ukranians does not want to be aligned with Russia anymore.
