Because we didn't get the supposed help that we need from the other superpower. What had China got is already hard for us to take it back, but we should not them get whatever we have now. That is the status quo until we make ourselves strong (years?) in the eyes of our neighbors.

panatag shoal technically isnt under chinese possession as they have no infrastructures there yet, its merely under guard with their coast guard.

we can do the same, by sending our coast guard boats there. that ought not trigger a shooting war if thats what you are scared of

their Mayor's goons/staff gave away 1K per attendee of 3 different presidential candidates (I won't mention them to avoid arguments)

so his maid and driver made an easy 3K by just showing up at rallys.
