In 1998, Hugo Chavez was elected president of Venezuela on the back of populist, socialist rhetoric. Most of his support came from the middle class who wanted "order" and a "strong hand to fight crime & corruption". Sounds familiar?
His friends & relatives took key positions in govt. He amended the constitution, giving himself greater powers. He demonized the US & alienated the Church. He waged war against the oligarchs declaring "being rich is bad". He allowed China to take over large areas of the economy. Sounds familiar?
Chavez stayed long in power, getting reelected several times & even coming back after being ousted by a coup. Venezuela was a major oil exporter & oil prices were high. Oil profits bankrolled his social programs & bought support. He died in office in 2013.
Despite huge oil bonanza, Chavez mismanaged the economy. He imposed currency controls to prevent capital flight (sounds like Marcos) preventing business from buying equipment, supplies & raw materials. His govt spent far more than it could afford. When oil prices collapsed, they run huge fiscal deficits & incurred heavy debts.
Today Venezuela is on the brink of collapse. Inflation has eaten up the value of wages. There are shortages of everything - energy, gasoline, food, medicine. There is rationing & looting. Massive unemployment. 3/4 of the population live in poverty. Crime has worsened. And corruption? The richest Venezuelan today is reported to be Maria Gabriela Chavez, Hugo's daughter with $4.2 billion stashed overseas.
We've seen his type before. Marcos' 14-year dictatorship sucked the Philippine economy dry & led to world-record plunder. We have a wannabe right now. Let's step back & weigh our choices carefully. Will we arrest corruption by electing one with a P2.4B quesiton mark? Will we be safer under death squads?

Senator Grace Poe on Thursday quashed rumors she will drop out of the presidential race amid the decline in her survey ratings over the past few weeks.
In a press conference in Makati City, Poe slammed those spreading rumors she will concede so the voters' choices for president in the upcoming polls will be lessened.
"Sa mga iba diyan na nagsasabi na dapat ay pagbigyan na lang ang iba para dalawa na lang ang naglalaban, sino ba sila para magsabi kung sino ang dapat pipiliin ng ating mga kababayan?" she asked.
Poe said she will not enter into a deal with any entity to withdraw.
"Hindi po tayo sindikato na makikipag-ayusan kahit kanino para mawalan ng opsyon ang ating mga kababayan.
"Hindi rin ito isang transaksyon para ibenta ang mga pangarap ng ating mga kababayan kaya para doon sa mga nagkakalat ng mga kuwento na ako ay susuko, isipin niyo kung ano ang pinagdaanan nating lahat," she said.
Poe said she had to set the record straight since she has been recently receiving reports and texts asking her to confirm if she has indeed withdrawn from the presidential race. —KG, GMA News

Sa tagal hinawakan ang bocaue. Nasaan ang asenso?
Tapos kapal ng mukha yung kapatid mag senador pa. Eh sarili nga balwarte hindi maayos-ayos.
Buti nga yung tatay napagod na tumakbo presidente. Nahimasmasan sigurado na hindi pwede pagsamahin church and state.

Thanks for sharing bro Monseratto...
It was bro JM who has almost convinced me to vote for her. But right now I am not. If and only if this is true, then I admire her for her adherence to her conviction and to her supporters...
I am troubled with the way the administration is bending the light. Beg, steal or borrow. They might as well throw in the kitchen sink... Again, Roxas's heaviest baggage is his steadfast affiliation with the administration and its actions. Again, in my book, this is an admirable thing to do, but will not help his cause. He's the man to win this election, but alas it might just come to naught...Last edited by CVT; May 5th, 2016 at 06:54 PM.
